testing new birds

In the thinking process of getting a new baby bird for Christmas I have a question about testing for new birds.

I had previously had my current bird and recently deceased bird both had the full works of tests, a CBC with every test the vet recommended. I did this first with Pedro when he was boarded (it was a requirement of where he went) and then again with Marley to make sure he didn't have anything to give to Pedro.

If I get a new baby do I need to have him tested for everything also or since he would be a baby would he be safe? I don't want to expose Marley to anything, but I also don't want to spend over $300 if it isn't needed. Isn't it funny how a $20 budgie could end up costing you $500 after vet visits, tests, cage, toys, etc. Geez!

It would be safest to test a new bird if at all possible. Avian Biotech does some disease testing, though it's still pricey if you add all the tests up if you do a numerous amount. It really depends on where the new bird comes from, Petstore, a home, or a breeder, and depends on how clean and well cared for the birds were in that particular place.

It would probably be easier, and less stressful on a new baby to wait until next year to get him/her as this time of year can be quite hectic and stressful on birds while their humans go about running all over the place!

I would have to agree with tests and even if they come back negitive some diseases or viral infections have an incubation time.
Bringing home a "new" bird is always exciting, but quarantine is also a must until all tests have been completed and your vet gives the "all clear" signal.

I have a bird that has a contagious virus, it did not show up until I noticed a problem with an inflammed ear and took him to the vet and had the tests ran.
When I go to the pet store I shower before I leave the house and I am very careful as what I do handle while I am in the pet store.
I can not just stop at a pet store on a whim, I carry my bird with me where ever I go. I do not attend bird shows, and thank goodness no one I know has birds.

Is this baby around any other birds at all?

I do not want scare you but I can not stress enough you need to be careful.

Good luck on any new babies you do acquire.
I would LOVE to have another bird a few more if I could but that is no longer an option I have.
I did not have the heart to put Squeaky to sleep I am told he can lead a fairly normal life and I plan on giving him that and lots of LOVE too.
I do have a tiel but got her right at about 30 days later, we live and learn.
The smaller common birds like lovies and budgies and tiels are not usually tested for anything as it is not cost efficient (what a shame).
