Thinking of getting either a Sun, Jenday, or Queen of Bavaria
ANyone have any experiences with any of these birds? The Queens I have heard are the perfect bird...is there such a thing? Supposedly very cuddly, not loud, never bite, but extremely expensive. Are suns and Jendays sweet, cuddly and affectionate?

An aquaintance of mine brought home a Sun conure. Beautiful bird. Funny, very good to step up, interacts well with her daughter with supervison. They were delighted with how the bird "acts". They were not prepared for how "noisy" the bird was. I do not know anything from hands on experience with these birds, but I would be hesitant to bring home any conure due to their tendency to be Very Loud. It's a good thing that you are researching BEFORE you get any bird. So many people don't. Keep up the good work, and I hope that what ever you choose, suits you and your lifestyle perfectly.

Suns and jendays tend to be the noisiest of all conures out there. If raised properly they may be cuddly, and may be great talkers, but they have a scream that they may do incessistanly. You can't have a sun or jenday that is less than a year old and not think it's loud because as soon as they start reaching maturity (around 2 years old, sometimes several months before or after) they start to really bring the volume up. I don't have any hands on experience with suns and jendays as far as actually owning them, though this is information that I have learned and gathered from other people.
As far as QOB conures, I don't know much about them entirely. They are rare conures so one MUST have a permit to keep these birds, maybe even a permit to move them across state lines, and because they are rare they are expensive. I've heard they are great pets, though if they are rare most would probably do better in a breeding situation to bring up their populations.

The only one of these birds I have experience with is a sun. I would definitely advise you though to make sure you hear how loud they can be before deciding if they are a good fit for your home. I have one at the rescue center I volunteer at who I would LOVE to take home, but I am in apt. and he is loud, loud, loud. Very high pitched voice too, not pleasant to the ear at all. But if you can handle the noise, I think their sweet personalities definitely make up for it.

Hi Kim, I noticed that you have some very loud birds yourself. It's funny, some people can stand the noise of a certain type of bird and not the noise of another. I find the chatter of my son's parakeet to be THE most annoying noise (lol). Well as it turns out I brought home the Sun Conure. My house is pretty quiet and I don't have any other birds so maybe I'll luck out and she won't be as noisy.

The bird store near me had two QOB conures. They were both so sweet and affectionate. Just crawling on top of you from the playstand. Very cute, sweet birds. The staff at the bird store didn't say anything about needing a special permit for them.

Ditto here about posessing a permit to keep the Queen of Bavaria.
Last I knew- they were only allowed to be kept as part of a breeding program due to their rarity. I've also been told that they are very fussy birds, not very easily kept.. That said, they ARE beautiful, and they were on my 'must have' list until I found out how rare they were...I'd much rather see them in breeding programs than in my bird room! |

Queen of Bavaria's Conure
(Formerly: Aratinga guarouba) Now: Guaruba guarouba -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Other common names: Golden Conure, and as listed in the U.S. Endangered Species Act Golden Parakeet. Also referred to in aviculture as Goldens or Queens. There is very little written about these birds in the wild or in captivity. I will do my best to give you the information that I have found. I will also share with you my experiences with these magnificent birds after owning a pair since February 1994. I am by no means an authority on this subject and much of the information has been compiled from Parrots of The World by Joseph M. Forshaw, Parrots in Aviculture by Rosemary Low, The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, The Office of Scientific Authority and Dave Followill of Followill Aviaries. The photograph of the young Queen of Bavaria's Conures was also supplied by Dave Followill. I have indicated on the background map the range of these birds in red. Their range is very small, contained to North-east Brazil, south of the Amazon, in eastern Pará and adjacent and northern Maranhão to the western side of Tapajos. Man is reducing the size of their range rapidly with the construction of roads (two major highways have recently been cut through their range), the Tucurui dam which flooded 888 sq. miles of land and human colonization. They are rarely seen in the wild and are extremely rare in aviculture. In the United States they require 50CFR captive bred endangered species permit. They were noted as becoming increasingly rare as far back as 1946. http://www.breedersblend.com/queens1.html Last edited by LissaKokoKiwiKaseySam; 11-21-2005 at 01:32 AM. |

Sun Conure
Quote:
I am seriously considering getting another Sun Conure (about six months old). He is so adorable. If so, I will quarantine him for about 30 days before introducing him to Chico. Has anyone ever had two sun conures at the same time? |
