Wink There is something to be said about large parrots...

...and their domineering personalities!!

A few days ago, I left my unassuming bf and our dog (a black lab/rottie mix named Indy) at our home so I could run some errands. An hour later, I recieve a phone call from my bf saying, "GET HOME NOW! Your bird has escaped!"

Now, bear in mind that ever since I have owned my cockatoo, I have always read how they are notorious for breaking out of their cages! Pad-locks (which Lucky has on his) chains or whatever...somehow this species of parrot seems to meticulously figure out how their locking mechanisims work! Well, for the past 12 or so years while he has been with me, he's never broken out...NEVER.

Well, my dear friends here on the birdboard...never say "never" when it comes to your fids! Apparently, Lucky somehow managed to stick his little foot out of the cage and BEND THE KEY that was sticking in the lock (I kept the key in the lock so I wouldn't ever lose it...and that arrangement had worked fine for twelve years or more 'cause when I got him his cage had a pad-lock on it). Anyway...now if you merely TOUCH the key, the lock springs open! Just like that! SOOOOOO, when I got home my bf told me the following:

He had been going around the house doing various chores, all the while, Lucky was talking to him. Sure, he'd scream every now and again, but it was normal. So my bf and our dog go upstairs so he can play some playstation to relax. Well, all of a sudden, he hears a loud BANG! He goes downstairs to investigate but saw that the neighbor's flag-pole broke and he didn't think nothing of it. Meanwhile, the dog wouldn't come downstairs! She sat on the stairs whimpering! My bf thought she was just acting weird so he and the dog go back upstairs again.

Then, for the next twenty minutes to a half hour he hears Lucky talking away! "Hello!" "Hello!" "What'cha doin'?". My bf told me that he just thought Lucky might have been playing with his toys and was really happy...

So after he was done, he went downstairs. Again, the dog wouldn't come down. She sat on the stairs crying. Chris didn't understand why until he walked around the corner and came face to face with my birdie perched on his new cage (he has both his old cage and his new cage facing each other so he can get used to the sight of his new cage). Now, my bf is afraid of Lucky. He thinks Lucky's cute and funny, but he doesn't like the large can-opener on the end of Lucky's face...that, and Lucky's size intimidates him. So he slowly moves to the dog and calls her to quickly sweep her outside!

Which brings me to the title of this thread...there IS something to be said for the domineering personalities of our LARGE fids...that they can have an animal who is TEN TIMES their size and weight cowering TWO ROOMS AWAY! LOL! It's kinda funny when you think about it! I thought that when we first adopted Indy that she would bother Lucky...but NO! She's scared to death of him! She won't even go near his cage!

The conclusion? Well, I guess waiting 27 years to break out was fun for a time, but after a while, it was just plain boring, so he flew (even though he IS clipped) back into his cage and started tearing up the paper that lines the bottom. We have since removed the bent key, which keeps him firmly in his cage (though he was none too happy that we discovered his secret!) But all in all, Lucky's fine and so is Indy!

Thanks for reading!
Talk to you guys later!
Misty

You are one blessed parront. As I began reading this thread all I could think of was how much destruction would be found when the criminal was finally apprehended. I think she just wanted to show her stuff.

NOT ONE THING WAS TOUCHED!!! He was a good boy while he was out of jail! LOL! He just sat on his new cage for a half hour talking! He made me so proud that he didn't destroy any furniture! LOL!

WEll, I too am amazed that he didn't "decorate" anything. My macaws are notorious for removing wall paper, wood trim and anything else interesting along the way. They remind me of army ants. You are very lucky to have such a well behaved pssitizen.
