Question Quick question to BB members....

I'm currently living with my bf and our Triton cockatoo, Lucky and our dog, Indy. Here's the situation...my mom wants to give me her CAG, Chico 'cause she says that she doesn't have the time to care for him and wants him to go to a home that can spend the time with him that he needs. I don't mind this at all, I love Chico and would love to have him as an addition to my family.

So here's my question: Chico's never been around dogs before, save the time I brought Indy over to visit my mom. Then, he acted very scared of her, unlike Lucky who "rules the roost" over here. I don't think Indy would bother Chico as Indy has recently demonstrated that she is quite terrified of Lucky and seemed to ignore Chico while she was over at my mom's. How can I ease the little guy's transition?

It would be a few weeks before I would attempt this because I would like to move Lucky into his new cage first (to free up some space in my home).

What do you guys think?

Thanks in advance!

Misty

This can be a tough call, but not impossible..you just have to keep a few things in mind..

Chico is NOT Lucky- just because Lucky isn't bothered by Indi, doesn't mean that Chico won't be..you will need to closely monitor the two of them and DO NOT let Indi near Chico unattended..it could end very badly if Chico is perceived as a threat..you may not see it, but Indy may feel it.

Don't expect Lucky and Chico to be best buds from the very first moment..the size difference alone should warrant extreme caution.

Is Lucky male? how might he perceive another bird in his territory?

You will need to take it very slowly.. I don't know how long you've had Lucky, but he is a 'senior' Too- sexually mature and set in his ways depending upon how long you've had him...

Keep them in separate rooms if you can..let them hear each other, wonder what is going on..then gradually bring them to playstands ( separate on opposite sides of the room so they can see but not touch)- let them get used to each other's presence..then maybe a couple of months down the road you can put them in the same room together in their own cages...

Hope this helps give you some ideas- good luck and congratulations on giving Chico a new home!
