Question calling all tiel owners please...

I am picking out a new baby cockatiel and need the opinion of those with tiels already please.....

This is regarding volume levels. As I've mentioned before, I live in an apartment, so noise is an issue for us. We already have a tiel, and although we've been told he is probably male, the way he calls is more like a female (maybe he is a she afterall?) So I am only familiar with that tiel short calling voice, kind of like whistles but just single calls. The breeder of this new confirmed Male, says he is a great singer (already knows some Christmas tunes). It is really hard to determine how loud this is without hearing him in person first, but he lives in Indiana which is a five hour drive (he will be meeting us halfway) Anyone here have female AND male tiels? Would you say the singing is louder than those shrill calls? If anyone happens to have sound clips I would be so grateful too!

Also, if Marley actually is a girl....can they mate if they are not caged together? Thanks everyone!!!!

I have a female, so I don't know too much about the male, but with my 'zon and my sennie, I have a hard time imagining a cockatiel ever being a problem in an apartment. They just don't have the volume that some of the larger birds do.

I'd imagine he might be very noisy and whistle enough to drive you crazy, but I doubt that the sound will carry through walls enough to really bother your neighbors.

But again, that's my female... I don't know about a male.

I only have a male, and he is loud enough to hear at the other end of our large farm house. He drives everybody nuts the majority of the time. He does whistle a few tunes, but he tends to scream a lot. I could never have him in my apartment! We had a female tiel at the vet clinic where I worked. Even with all the dogs barking, cats meowing, cows bellowing...she was fairly quiet. She was up front in the lobby, and would talk to people and whistle, but never screamed like my Dakota.

I have we believe a female and I'm sorry to say she can wake the dead!!!! That girl is loud I'm in an apartment and I worry about the noise alot. But I hear other people say females hardly make any noise at all. So it just depends on the bird.

hi

i have 2 tiels, one is a confirmed female, the other a baby who hasnt malted yet.

when im hanging around astro (female) she isnt loud at all, but when shes screaming for attention, shes fairly loud.

i also live in an apartment, i havent had any complaints yet.

so basically, her screams are loud (especially when shes sitting on my shoulder next to my ear, ouch!) but when shes just trying to join in on the conversation im having on the phone, shes not too bad

I wouldn't think a tiel could be so loud as to be heard through an apartment wall---I have a little male who talks, sings, whistles and rarely does scream.....I cannot imagine being able to hear it through walls---but I could be wrong.

My male, Putter, isn't loud at all, but we've taught him alot of songs. When I found him he already knew Pop goes the weasel, and did different whistles. Now he sings Let's go flyers, and he's working on the Irish fight song. My husband is a sports fanatic. I think if you teach the little man songs he'll use that to get your attention. Also, fromwhat everyone else is saying, birds are individuals so you never know what your going to get. Life is a box of chocolates....
