ok, new question.....

has anyone else had as hard a time as I'm having trying to decide what type of new bird to get?? My goodness

In follow up to another post, what would you say is the quietest bird? Other than anything like a finch or canary (something you can bond and play with). I can't wait to have a house of our own so we can get any type of bird we want!!!!

Well, my caique is pretty dang quiet... and my zon doesnt utter a peep other than to whistle or talk.
But looking for a quiet bird I would go for
tiels
pyrruhua conures
budgies
caiques
lovebirds (if you can stand the shrill call they have, I personally cannot)
those sized birds. Just remember the rule of thumb- bigger the bird, the louder the call

My male eclectus is pretty darn quiet but a very good talker. He simply never screams and he has a very charming voice. He likes to play with his toys and can really destroy them, but he does not really play much with me. However, he does love to give me kisses. My mother always describes my ekkie as a "fine gentleman".

I have three birds that are quiet. Two of them are my green cheek conures. They can say hello and mommy. The do make their own general noises sometimes which is not loud. The next bird that I have is my female solomn electus. She talks when she wants to, but others than that she is quiet, she does not yell. I hope this helps (now my mexican red head amazon and blue and gold macaw does make alot of noise which not only includes talking, but yelling as well)

I have to agree with the Ekkies being quiet. I was rather shocked cosidering their size. My female only screams when she's afraid of something...not often at all. For the most part she talks and whistles and I never get tired of hearing that!

Thanks for the posts :)

I was glad to hear the suggestion about green cheeked conures too because they recently came up in this search and I had read they were quiet also, always good to hear from someone who know for sure though! :)

Yup, I owned a GCC, and even went she went through a peiod of nonstop screaming, it wasnt as loud as it could have been, if you know what I mean. I have owned lovies, tiels, etc, and I would pick a GCC scream over lovies ANY day!

Pionus, and any of the African birds tend to be more quiet, like Senegals, Meyers, Red Bellie. I think the thing to do when you love so many kinds is to go to a bird store if you have one and look around, interact with some of the birds if they allow it. Ask the staff about those particular birds personalities (since they handle them everyday they would know) and then if you are able, hold some, talk to them, play with them and then...most importantly...let them pick YOU. You might think you want one type of bird and then form an attachment/bond with another and then you know it's the right bird for you

The thing about the african birds, is that they are very shrill. I actually call them human dog whistles. So, it depends on what kind of person you are, what your ears can take. Does a lovebirds call make you cringe, but a goffins cockatoo call leave you indifferent? How about the constant chattering of budgies, does it drive you nuts, while a macaws scream leaves you unphased? I respond YES to both of those, and I am the type of perosn that abosultely CRINGES when it comes to lovebird and senegal, meyers, etc. calls. They literally hurt my ears. So before you buy, I would recommend listening to the call of the bird....
But Poinus have a different call, not so high pitched, and have to be pushed a lot into screaming. That would be another bird to look into....

The problem with all of the above is even though some Ekkie's, Caiques, zons and even pionus are considered quiet birds you do find those individuals that are major screamers. I have a BH pionus that makes every other bird in my house sound quiet. Lord does he scream. It is only two sometimes three times a day but when he screams the whole block hears it. You can't hear TV, the dog howls, he really has a loud scream.

IMHO Stick with a smaller bird that is to small to have that volume. Greencheeks and brownthroated conures just don't have the lungs to be able to scream loudly, they are so tiny.
