Poor baby pigeon

Ever seen a baby pigeon? I did, yesterday. This is a sad story so please don't keep reading if you get upset by sad bird stories.

I was on my way to work, walking down the street. I was in the middle of the city in London. I looked down and saw a very small baby pigeon, huddle up against a wall. He was fully feathered, definitely a pigeon, but the size of a cockatiel! He was all fluffed up, shivering, and looked very frightened and confused. It was freezing and wet out)

I went into my office and called the RSPCA (like the SPCA but in England it has R for "Royal" in front). They said to get a box, put the baby pigeon in, and bring him into the warm, and they will come get him. I was on hold for about 10 minutes before they answered.

I got a box, went outside and, in the meantime, he had wandered into the street and got killed. If only I had not waited on hold for 10 minutes, but followed my instinct and just put him in a box in the first place!
I burst into tears and went back to work . Everyone at work knows I'm a crazy bird lady so they were sympathetic. He hadn't fledged yet, so couldn't fly. He was confused and must have just wandered into the road, not having gained that fear of cars that grown up pigeons have.

Above where I found the baby, there is a light up sign that I always see pigeons going in and out of. I'm sure the nest was back there, and he was pushed out of his nest. I had no idea there were baby pigeons around this time of year.

I know that the last thing this world needs is another city pigeon, but I was upset nonetheless. He was adorable. All fluffed up and small. Even pigeon haters would have thought he was cute.

Rest in Peace little one.

Oh that is so sad! At least you were kind enough to try and help though. You did a good thing.

Well I wouldn't say I'm a pigeon hater but certainly not a lover but I do hate to see any animal suffer and that poor animal suffered. I hope that it was killed instantly by a car and didn't die slowly, that would make me nuts

I too saw a pigeon that needed help one day, but could not stop in the fast lane on the George Washington Bridge in NYC. I tried to stop to get this limping bird, as a truck came flying up behind me honking and almost hit me...
Unfortuatly, I had to move or be rear ended. I'm sure the pigeon did not last more than 30 seconds after I was forced to pass it.

Michele, you have such a kind heart. Cant wait to have you home!

I'm so sorry Michelle! At least you cared enough to try to help the little guy. Many people don't like pigeons, but after rescuing a baby and raising her I have realized how great they are. I hope it was a quick and painless end for the little baby. I also hope you don't have to go through any more pigeon incidents!

I think people don't like Pigeons because they are associated with dirt and filth and tend to be pesty in the US. But the other day I was looking at one and noticed how pretty it was. It has iridescent blue and purple feathers at it's neck and it is very much like a dove. From what I hear in Australia, Cockatoos ruin people's lawns and are as common and in abundance as pigeons.

Pigeons are beautiful! Here are a few pictures of my Mollie. In the second picture I think she was going to land on the cat...you can just see the quickly disappearing tail. With the exception of one cat who likes to play with Mollie, and our old collie who puts up with her riding on her back, all my animals are terrified of her!
