bird cabinet. Good idea?
Hey guys,
I'm sort of playing with an idea and I'd be interested in some feedback. At the pet shop I worked at for 4 years, all our hand-raised birds were kept in cabinets with a wire inset and proper ventilation, and I have been wondering why no-one has made a bird cabinet for peoples houses! So I'm building a cabinet which will be just over 6ft tall and 2ft deep with a large 4ft caged area. It'll have sliding doors at the front, and a small side access door roughly a foot in size. The doors and sides will be powdercoated wire and the back a laminated board. It will be ventilated from the back and have storage underneath the cabinet. It will also have perches, swivel feeders and all neccessary toys for my little quaker! So whats your thoughts! What else is it missing? Do you think it would be popular? I've gotta say I think it would be. It gives the flexibility of a nice looking cage that doesn't look like a miss-match metal. Of course it could be any size, I'm basing the idea on these cabinets found in aquariums, but of course more suited to birds :p ![]() |

Thanks for that, I hadn't seen those before!
Very similar design. I like the way they're made theirs. Mine would cost considerably less - the 4ft one mentioned would be around $1200-1500 AUD and would include alot of those features for that price. This is a sketch I made to show what I was thinking. ![]() |

I don't particularly care for cabinet type cages... they may not be easy to clean, or they are made out of wood that the birds would chew... and I don't particularly care for glass in a cage, where a bird would freak out, go bashing about the cage, and keep hitting glass... many say that birds can get used to it, but still I don't particularly care for the idea myself.

I agree with you, but judging by his diagram, he is not going to be using glass. The aquarium pic is referring to only the style of wood cabinet. (I think?)
Assuming there will be no glass, it's a good idea I guess. The panel in back would hide the wiring for the climate control and lighting systems. The cabinet is a "cleaner" look to be certain. Very stylish. But I think it's always best for a cage to be bars on all sides and on top. Even if that means there are unsightly humidifiers, air purifiers, and FS light fixtures everywhere. I think the real question is why you think you can do all that for so much cheaper than cages by design? I'm not asking you to go into detail I'm just saying that as a consumer, IF I were interested in that style I'd be wary of what you were doing to cut costs. |

I don't like them cause they look to big and bulky... but, its just a personal thing.
