Ethoxyquin

Does anyone have any opinions regarding Ethoxyquin?

Just curious.

Thanks.

I do. It's bad stuff! I was horrified to notice last night that it is listed as an ingredient for Nutriberries! Needless to say, they immediately went into the trash.

I avoid it. Better safe than sorry, eh?

"E" is not even approved for human consumption, so I do not consider it safe for my birds. If you see ethoxyquin listed in the ingredients of any bird food, or any food otherwise, it would be better to pass that food over.

I agree, I used to feed nutriberries but have stopped b/c of the E in them. I now go to a local bird store and buy their fresh mixes.

The gourmet nutriberries the ones in bags that are like sunny orchard and garden veggie are now ethoxyquin free. You just need to look at the ingredients on the bag most of them have a sticker that say new preservative. The regular nutriberries I've been told will be within a couple of months. Avi-cakes are "e" free also. I use quite a bit of lafeber stuff.

That is good news. I, too, liked giving Nutriberries before I learned that ethoxyquin was in them. I never gave them as a staple, just as a treat, but my birds loved them and I always thought it was a good, healthy treat.

I will be looking for the E-free new Nutriberries. Sam and Beeper will be excited if I start buying them again.

Thanks goodness! I have been giving Ollie nutriberries, but thankfully they are the gourmet kind in the bag. I'm glad I don't have to throw them away because she loves them!

Wow, I feel ignorant, so Ethoxyquin is some sort of preservative? What kind of an effect can it have on birds? BTW, thanks for the heads up I'll definatley need to invest in a different type of nutriberries.

Thanks for all of the responses.

I have been wondering whether or not I was "crazy" or really just "in the know" about it. My question has been answered: WE'RE ALL CRAZY, right?

I switched my babies to Zupreem a couple of years ago as soon as I heard about it.

I was actually working for Petsmart (ugh) at the time, and I made them give me my money back when I returned all of the crap-food.

Because Petsmart (ugh) is in cahoots with one of the crap-food places, we, as pee-ons, were supposed to convince customers to buy the dirt. Despite what Petsmart (ugh) believed, though, I do have morals; I won't let anyone turn me in to an "E" dealer.
