I believe it (Convection) cooks foods in half the time of a regular oven. I've never used one, but they are very popular -- especially the type combined with microwaves and regular ovens.

I am renovating my kitchen and ordering my appliances now. I had no idea! Thanks for posting this Nancy!!!

No convection ovens here, and now there never will be!

I wouldn't rule convection ovens out.... Really, all a CONVECTION oven does is circulate the air inside the oven, for more even and faster cooking. The heating elemets, etc. are the same more or less as in a conventional oven. I have one! It is GREAT!

I also have a Microvection oven- which is smaller and fits over the range. It functions as a normal microwave, but also adds grilling, baking, etc. It is a really handy device.

My guess is that the fumes that killed the birds were probably the result of something burning on the heating element the first time that it was used... A protetive coating of some kind or something- and would probably have been only a one time thing... You hear about this happening every so often with other types of heating elements when they are new (E.g. hair dryers, hotplates, etc). I doubt that any manufacturer would produce an appliance that CONSTANTLY put out toxic fumes- I realize that a bird is far more sensitive, but still- They are careful about things like that in this lawsuit happy world.

Of course, if you have concearns, you can contact the manufacturer... I am sure that they will address them in some way.

I actually contacted all the companies when I ordered new appliences, and even the new drier.
They are usually very friendly and helpful!
