Okay...What is your reason for getting a small bird - and why is it so important that it do tricks?

small bird

for tricks and talking ability i would say a quaker or lory.
Both are not a bird for beginners and can/will bite the @#$% out of you

I love both breeds tho.

have you had a bird before?

If not, I really advise that you research the amount of work and effort, one-on-one time, etc. that goes into keeping a bird healthy and happy. And, there are many many birds waiting to be rescued from shelters....I don't know if this stat is correct, but I did once read that 90% of birds are given up within the first year because people don't realise what they are getting themselves into.

what really gets me mad about this post is ..that alot of ppl just wanna get birds for their talking abality or learning tricks...i say to them a bird is a bird not every one of them will learn tricks or talk but are equally amazing to own..what happens most of the time is ppl will get a bird and when it dosent talk or do anything they will get rid of it ..because of it ..

so please if ure thinking of getting a bird please dont ge them and excpect it to talk or do tricks ..and just love the bird for who it is and what it has to offer:)

Cockatiels get my vote for best small bird-very sweet natured and clever and they bond easily to their humans. Birds don't have to do "tricks" to be entertaining. Just put a few branches of bottlebrushes, greviileas or gum trees in with any native Aussie bird and watch them play! 8) :D

i agree with sweetie and meli

Some of my friends hear about or see my bird and think "how cool...a bird that talks and does tricks!...let me get one to add to my collection of 4 out-of-control dogs and 13 hour at-work days!" What they don't know is that I never taught my bird to talk, nor did I expect her to. And, through direct interaction, my bird likes to play and some of her habits could be seen as tricks.

Just as sweetie and meli pointed out, when these birds do not "perform" as their owners want, well, there comes part of the 90% stat. :(
