Question NJ residents-Potentially Dangerous Species

I was browsing the NJ Division of Fish & Wildlife to see what species were on the Potentially Dangerous Species list. I knew the Monk parakeets (aka Quaker Parrots) were considered a dangerous species but was surprised to see Ringnecks and Patagonian conures listed as well.

If I am reading the information correctly, that means that I cannot legally own an IRN (for example) as a pet, in accorance to N.J.A.C. 7:25-4.8 and N.J.A.C. 7:25-4.9. The link below goes into more detail:

http://www.state.nj.us/dep/fgw/dangrspp.htm

I plan on calling a few of the reputable bird stores in the state that I've dealt with AND the NJ Division of Fish & Wildlife to clarify.

Was anyone else aware of this?

Eliza....

I am one of the co-founders of "Bird Clubs Of New Jersey" and
founder of The Sussex County Exotic Bird Club.
You can not own an Indian Ring Neck or Quaker legally in NJ.
I will find you a link of what the clubs in NJ did.

I suggest ya dont mess with them.
They use NJ as an "Example State" and pass laws without grandfathering in the middle of the night....Other states, and other Bird clubs see what they have done, and get thier voices heard prior to the new laws and rules.....
nearly 1000 bird club members throughout NJ,sent Representitives from each club and we met with Fish Game and Wildlife, several times.

Thus another reason to support your local bird club no matter what state you are in. Alone you can do nothing~~~~~~~~~~together you can do EVERYTHING!

If anyone has an answer for me it it's you, Lisa :)

I knew about the Quakers but had NO IDEA about IRNs! No wonder I've never seen them in the bird stores around here...

Believe me -- I don't want to mess w/ Fish & Game. I had hedgehogs for quite a while (legal in NJ but illegal in PA, HI, CA and others) and knew of folks who had the PA officials raid their houses

Silly laws

I don't have a quaker but I know a few and they seem like sweet birds. I understand they do have quite a bite though. Is this why they are considered 'dangerous'?

They are nuisance birds as far as the power companies are concerned. The build huge nests around transformers and sometimes cause power outages. Since they have to have access to the transformers to keep you in electricity, they have made laws that allow those states to EXTERMINATE them. Makes me nauseous. That's why you can't have quaker parrrots.

I haven't a clue about the conures and ringnecks.

Also, some birds are very hardy and learn to survive in the wild, causing a potential hazard to crops. California is the top food provider in the entire USA (from what I have understood) so they value their agriculture greatly. If a flock of quakers were to become established in California, they would worry that the quakers would destroy all the crops, which means that the farmers, and state, would bring in less money that year due to crops being destroyed...

This is just another reason for quakers....

yeah

Wow I am surprised, the quakers build huge nests in utility poles, and can raid crops..like any other bird may. But IRNs and Pat conures, no nests there.

Wow I am worried, we should all be. Whats next sun conures?? Tiels??

I do not belong to a local bird club but I am glad you brough that up Lisa I think i will be checking into my local club today!

If I lived in New Jersey I'd be irrate 2 of 4 birds are on the list!

I'm glad I dont live in america, all those laws on what pets you can keep are kind of silly. And different in every state! OMG How confusing. I'd get arested for something I didn't even know was wrong if I lived in america, I'm sure of it. :S

If you had to move states would you have to get rid of your beloved pets? That would be so sad.

yes. they would confisgate and destroy ones that are not allowed.

the reason for them not being allowed in Nj is because as someone mentioned, they can adapt to cold weather climates. Sunnies and tiels could not.
funny part is....they are allowed in neighboring states. Like an escaped bird is going to know state lines???

Even if you dont go to bird club meetings, there are many other benefts that come in handy. usually there are newsletters that keep you informed of the happenings that will effect you, shows, and bird related articles. You usually get a discount with the local pet stores too.
When the lawmakers of your state start to get some wild ideas, you can ban together to make it work. Unfortuatly NJ law makers dont not care. Our laws were thrown on us after being passed in the middle of the night.( well it seemed like it )

Fish game and Wildlife are of no help. NJ has the TOUGHEST laws in regards to your birds. Some good, some bad...

NJ people check your licences....you granted FG&W the permission to come into your house unannounced between the hours of 7am and 9pm to inspect your flock. they will not change cloths from the previous house they were in, they will not clean thier shoes, no disenfectant procedure what so ever. What if the person before you had a bird with Beak and Feather? Birds on the Cities list, regardless of when they were added, can be confisgated, regardless of the place it was hatched, NO GRANDFATHER CLAUSE.....AT THE MONITARY LOSS OF THE OWNER, to be placed in a breeding situation, or released back into the wild where thier ansestors came from.....

...........but enough on NJ, for I have aggrivated enough people at Fish game and Wildlife to last me a lifetime.....(as they have me!! ))
and yes....I personally cant wait for my husband to retire in 4 years, and we are gone!!!!

Yikes! Im in NJ and have an IRN....

I adopted him from a woman who was moving to the Domican Republic. She was originally from Florida.

I wondered why I never saw them before....

He's a bit of a moody character and a real attention hound.... but I love him anyway...
