Talking First time out of cage

Thought I would post about my Budgie's first official day out of his cage and how he did. I took his cage in the bathroom (I determined this was the safest room for him to start in), had him step onto my knitting needle and moved him to the open cage door. From there I had him step up onto my finger and I brought him out. He did very well, he got anxious and fluttered 3 or 4 times, but every time that he landed in an odd/new space, like in the bathtub, he let me "rescue" him right away and he stepped up on command. He preferred to just sit on my finger, and I brought some toys like a little rope toy. He didn't play much, but he stepped up on various things, he was just content to sit on my finger, he was out for probably 30-40 minutes. We practiced quite a few step ups on my finger like a ladder.

So I'm very proud of him, he's quite the little guy. For Christmas I got a large gift card for Pet Supplies Plus and I've already gotten some new seed and treats for him, and today I picked up a few more toys and a soft rope perch, he's playing with his toys now.

Good job! Perhaps you can get him a little play gym to hang out next to you on as well . . .

Thanks! Yes I need to get a playgym. The petstore near me does not have one, perhaps I need to order one online.

Congratulations. I love stories like this - and owners who are willing to work with the bird at the bird's pace to help him become more confident and friendly. Great job!
