Yep red sided ekkies have solid black beaks. A brilliant bluish-purple bib that flows over the closed wing bend is almost for sure a hybrid. Usually the blue ring around the eyes isnt seen until after the first molt or a year old on a red sided. No matter what they are still beautiful. The colors are so wonderful, they look like a painting. I just adore the female ekkies. Their colors just amaze me.
LOL One day one will find me.

Thanks!!! I'm off soon for another visit. Yes that bald headed dude is me. I will ask if she is a hybred. I just wish I had this camera when I got Zoey (our Senegal) and Benji (our Lovebird).

According to the breeder she is definatly Red Sided. Says he has a thing about hybrids. Doesn't like them. He assures me that her beak color is due to being less then three months old. He has one breeding pair each of S.I. and R.S. But hell I have no idea myself........she could be a parakeet. :)

WEll, perhaps I'm wrong. Wouldn't be the first time. Ask my daughter. One of the problems with Ekkies today goes back to when they were first imported into the States. It was believed that the green birds and the red/blue birds were different species . Made for tough breeding . Anyway, the males are very difficult to classify by species. They have less by way of color differences than do the females. Consequently, often mismatched pairs are accidentally put together creating hybrids. Even good breeders sometimes get confused or themselves have purchased hybrids thinking they were purebreds.

Frankly, at the end of the day it really doesn't matter very much. She's just beautiful, you love her, and that's that.

Well, seems you have a very good breeder. Here is a photo I snagged on the web. My female was a hybrid and had the typical black beak. She was a RS/Grand cross.

This photo is of a Red Sided female Eclectus parrot. And, I might add, a very pretty one at that. This was on the Cedar Hill Birds homepage.

And a beauty Mai tai is!! I don't know enough about the differant sub species to even be able to make a guess myself. The breeder said the her beak will be all the black by the time she is a year old. It makes since of the possibilities with the only way to easily tell the males apart is by size that a mix up could happen.
A big S.I. or small Vos. Jeez, theres what 9 or 10 sub species depending on who ya ask? My best guess is everyone is right!! Thats hard to say to, I love a good debate!!
