I used to think that 'You' people were crazy...

When I first started hanging around the bird board, I used to read the listings of the parrots that everybody seemed to be 'collecting', and would kind of laugh. What kind of nut has all those birds?

Me, I guess... Meet Zoe, my 'new' Solomon Eclectus Hen-

This is a bad pic, from my cell phone...

I got Miro, my Severe, about 7 months ago. When I got him, Eclectus parrots were one of the species that I was considering, but Miro found me first... I have have been thinking about an eclectus, but not really actively looking for one.

Today we were walking through the local flea market. There are several bird breeders that set up there on the weekends, and I like to stop in and see what they have from time to time. Today, I walked in and one of them had a gorgeous Solomon Eclectus hen.

She is a bit of a 'project bird'. She is one year old (Jan 4th), and was returned by her previous owner. He had stuck his hand in her cage one day, and she bit him, so he was scared to death of her... She more or less sat in her cage with no human interaction for 10 months, so she isn't used to human contact.

But, She was pleasant with me. At first, she nipped a bit, but then calmed down and let me pet her. The breeder said that she didnt step up yet, but was learning... I gave it a shot, and she hopped up onto my hand, with a bit of hesitation. Not much longer, she was jumping right up there. She was just right...

So, I have another Parrot. She comes home tomorrow- Her new cage is all set- Of course she is going to be seperate from Miro for a Quarantine period, just to be safe. I know that she is going to need some work, but that is EXACTLY what I was looking for...

-Andrew

Congratulations! She is beautiful. My very first bird was a RS/Grand Ekkie hen. I recently rehomed her with a member on this very board. My second parrot was a Severe (LOL). Your hen will be happy IF you remember this: Ekkies are thinkers, much like greys. They don't thrive in noisy houses. That's why I rehomed Mai Tai. The more macaws I dragged home, the more aggravated she got. I think they gave her a headache. In any event, just remember that every bird you bring home really changes the way your "flock" operates. When I only had the ekkie, the severe and one BG, life was good. As I added the other birds, it got really hard on the ekkie. Lesson learned.

I think that the quiet nature of the Eclectus is what I like about it. I was acutally looking at greys as well, if one of them came along that needed a new home, that would have worked, too...

But, Zoe came along first....

I dont think that Miro will be too much for him. He CAN be loud at times, but he is pretty well behaved in general, and keeps his screeching to a minimum... And, it is NOTHING compared to the big Macaws that I have been around :)

congrats on your ekkie! I adopted mine last spring and she is everything I ever could have hoped for from a companion bird! I go back and forth in my mind about adopting another bird--but I don't ever want to upset Scarlett or lose my connection with her b/c she is stressed out, interested in another bird, etc. Best of luck with her!

this is my funny redhead:
