She's Home...

Went to pick up Zoe today-

When I first called the breeder, he told me that he was a little worried- She was NOT the bird that she had been when I saw her yesterday. She had attacked him when he tried to get her out of the cage, even drawing blood- back like she was when he first got her back from the original owner. He said that if I wanted my deposit back, he understood.

But, I decided to drive over to see her anyway... She was a lot calmer when I got there, and let me pet her, then stepped up onto my hand. No signs of aggression at all. So, She came home.

I realize that she is still going to need a lot of work, but she is already quite a sweet bird... She took grapes from my hand, and devoured them. Hasn't shown much interest in her pellets yet, but then again she has only been in the cage for about an hour...

The home she was in was a bit loud- several cockatoos, a B&G, a military, and misc. other birds. It is probably a releif to be in a nice, quiet place!!

I am told that she is a Red sided- She does have an eye ring-
, And is bigger and stockier than the S.I.'s that I have seen... Not sure about this, though- I am still a bit confused about the subspecies identification...

I am sure I will have more pics later :)

Well no matter what kind of Ekkie she is, she is stunning, wow what a great picture. I'm sure Nancy will be able to shed some light as to the appropriate environment for an Ekkie. She might have attacked the person you got her from because he might have reached into her cage and she might have some cage aggression. I had raised a female Ekkie from 3 weeks until she was weaned. She never bit me until the day I reached in her cage to give her her new owners. I think she knew what was happening. Birds are very perseptive and can pick up even the subtle-est of human emotions.

Beautiful, those birds always look unreal to me. If you haven't been here yet you should take a peek http://www.landofvos.com

some subspecies info
http://www.landofvos.com/articles/speciesprofile.html

Here are good pictures showign some differences
http://www.shadeseclectus.com/subspecies_id.htm

The red sided are much bigger, The only thing I am aware to watch for is potential nesting aggresion if you allow her to find a dark place or during breeding season, others here will know allot more than I.

Please, whatever you do, don't feed her pellets!!! I'm sure if you go to the Land of Vos as recommended you can read all the reasons why as I'm sure Nancy will also tell you. A good Fresh diet and a good seed mix is all you need. you don't want to over vitamin her or she could turn into a plucker, toe tapper or wing flipper!!! and you don't want that!!!

Congrats on such a beautiful girl. She looks so incredibly sweet!!! how old is she??? I lover her name too....Zoe... so sweet!

Congratulations! She is absolutely gorgeous! I am not an expert by any means, however, she looks exactly like my Scarlett who is a Solomon Island ekkie except that my Scarlett's beak is not that black yet as she is only about 8 months old and if I remember correctly, yours is at least 13 or 14 months old, right??? As I said, I am no expert, Nancy (aka The Outlaw), would be more able to help you but she really does look exactly like my S.I. Aren't they just the most beautiful creatures, ever? I think so, but I am just a littl biased . Well, again, congrats and keep those pics coming!
