Ppd Vs Isd
I see alot of notes asking people to donate for research for PPD. That does sound like an incredibly awful disease. However, because it seems that ISD (iron storage disease) is causing deaths in different species other than toucans, mynahs etc, perhaps there should be an awareness made of this disease. My avian vet, Dr Michael Doolan, says they do not know how or why birds are getting this disease. They are seeing it more and can't even relate it to any specific diet or trigger. I had never heard of it until it claimed my beautiful regent parrot at the young age of 8.
Just a thought............ |

ISD is also known as Hemochromatosis, and it's not the same thing as PDD...

Actually, Dr Doolan told me there is a difference between hematochromatosis and ISD. Hematochomatosis just affects the liver while ISD causes iron to be stored in other organs like kidneys, spleen etc. Hematochromatosis is a over abudance of fatty deposits primarily in the liver and is usually caused by diet.

PDD, or Proventriculum Dilation Disease, is a wasting disease..formally known as the 'macaw wasting disease', as it was once thought to be a terminal illness related only to the macaw species. This has since proven to be untrue, and has devastating effects on almost every species. Your bird loses weight, even if he eats constantly, passes undigested seeds...has a host of other problems. There is currently no cure and no way to positively confirm a diagnosis- except in a necropsy. There are many supporters of Dr. Ritchie and his research for a cure..we had a fund raiser around Christmas that raised over $2000 right here on Bird board.
You can read more about Dr. Ritchie and his research by clicking on the 'stop pdd' in my signature below.... Last edited by LissaKokoKiwiKaseySam; 01-11-2006 at 01:15 PM. |

oops Hematochromatosis is ISD-- my bad-- I had it mixed up I think w/PPD!
Uggh-- either way-- these bird disease are awful. With ISD they fade away to nothing. Once it kicks it, they lose all their body weight and die. It was terrible to watch Rocky Doodles go thru that. |
