Hyacinth $20,000 and new pet store observations

I just went to a new pet store and they have a 17 year old Hy that is $20,000!!!!!!!!!

I was all excited about this new found store and have to tell you it was sad, a dissapointment and filthy. I don't think I can go back and see the birds in that cage. First I have never seen cages like this. The bars were mor than 1 inch apart for the CAG, 'Zons and Hyacynth. The Hy had one toy in the cage and was keeping busy by diligently scraping the already peeling paint from the cage bars. I have to say the cage was huge but still I felt so sorry for the birds. You know when you go into a store and you leave feeling like the birds and all the other animals are being cared for. Well this store I left feeling sad and depressed. It's a family owned business. He had birds, rabbits, fish, mice, cats and 2 dogs that were his personal pets. The store was dirty, messy, smelled and crowded. The owner (who I spoke with for a while) seemed like a nice enough guy and I don't think there is any animal cruelty going on but just not the best condition. I was happy to see that ALL the animals were in appropriate sized cages but all the birds were in peeling cages which can't be good.

That's too bad about that store. It certainly doesn't sound like they have the animals best interests in mind.

What store do you usually go to?

If you haven't already, you should check out Feathers Bird Store in Marlboro, MA. It's a great store! And they have two sibling Golden Conures who live there that are *the* most adorable little birds you ever saw!

$20,000 for a 17 year old Hy? That sounds a little high to me. At least for an older Hy. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Oh yes I know feathers well, actually the queenies have moved to Florida along with the owner Laura. Her son is not running the store and they don't have any birds for sale anymore.

Yeah, I thought so. I found a site last night (of a breeder) that was selling handfed babies for $9,000. Even if a cage was included, $20,000 is WAY too much.

And what I don't understand is that this guy said it was his pet. He said he brought it to the store since that is where is spent most of the day. So i"m thinking that he priced the bird so high not really wanting to sell it but if some rich person came along then he'd sell it for $20K

:(

Lori, doesn't it just hit you in the stomach when you walk in and see something like that..not cruelty or anything but not a good life for the birds.

One toy in a cage is very close to deprivation I would say for birds that are inquisitive and so very intelligent. I feel bad for those parrots :(

There was a Hyacinth here in Florida at the flea market when Tara & I went there in November, I don't remember the age, but it was not an old bird. He was selling for $9500. So yeah.....$20,000 for a 17 yr old....those people need their heads examined

Young Hy's in the Northwest are 7-10K, Older birds 5-8K, older pairs around 17K. The 20K price they are asking is a window price and I'm sure they would sell the bird for alot less.
