Baba sits on her tail

Does anyone out there have a bird that sits on her tail like Baba does. She has been doing this ever since I have had her and that was at 5mos. She is now 5 years. I have attached a picture of her taken last year in our Motor home. She sleeps like this or sometimes will just sit there and scratch her little head. I find it actually strange, but it must be comfortable for her because she continues to do it.

Does she walk normal??? I've never actually seen a bird do this, even in photos, so this is strange!

Yup she has the normal bird wadle or run. I think it could be from having problems with tail feathers breaking when she was young as she would often sit like this to preen. I thought at first it was for balance, but that is only a guess. She sleeps like this all the time.

closest thing to that I have seen is a caique that instisted on laying on his back when he slept- one foot hanging on to the cage bar or carrier for support.

That is a very interesting habit your Baba has picked up/aquired.

Wonder why she started doing that? I guess it's just a "quirk" she has..makes her even more special :)

At least when she is like that she can't poop on you then ...right??

I am so glad you posted this. I have been trying to describe this to anyone that will listen to me. My Greenwing does this. I've only had him since July and when I first got him he didn't do it, maybe he wasn't comfortable enough. Then about 6-8 weeks ago he started it. He makes a noise when he does this that builds in crescendo. Then when he's done with the noise making, he's usually done with the tail sitting. I thought it may be something sexual. He also will take his tail feathers in his beak and has broken and snapped quite a few of them. It's sure a habit I wish would end.

I can see why you would want your greenwing to stop due to feather breakage.
Baba has had a fully feathered tail now for 2 years, she would preen new feathers coming in but never broke any off while sitting like this.

How old is your bird? Has he been dna sexed? I too had thought that it was sexual but she has been doing this since she was a baby so I am sure it is not. Sometimes the tail is over the perch and to one side as she stands on the opposite foot. I have asked others about this so Karen you are the first one that their bird does this behavior too.

I wish she would sit like that on my shoulder but no such luck, it's only in her cage or on a perch like her basket in the photo.

That is the cutest thing!!!!!!! I have none that sit on their tail, however, my goffin's likes to sleep with her tail raised up against one of her toys - explains why her tail feathers always look so ragged!
