Question Macaw not eating his veggies.

My new baby macaw doesn't seem to be eating his veggies at all. I think he had been on a seed only diet when I got him. If I give him a bowl of seeds, he tends to eat it all day and night, but he just takes each veggie and drops it on his tray over and over again till all the veggies land on his poop tray. He does eat some fruits though.

How do I get him to eat his veggies?

Can ya be more specific on exactly what veggies you are feeding and how they are prepared (fresh, frozen, canned, cooked, raw etc.?)

I've tried fresh carrots/cabbage/broccoli, thawed peas/string beans/corn/carrots.

I have a 17 yr old macaw who is likewise not fond of her veggies.

I've discovered a few ways mine will eat them: she has eatten cooked carrot, from my chix soup, cooked (soft but not totally mushy) broccoli, and cooked green beans (prev frozen) dipped in turkey gravy. (In all of the above cases, she has turned down very fresh versions of the same veggies.)

She has also eatten cooked corn on the cob, but that doesnt really have any particular nutritional value beyond starch & calories.

I'd say just keep trying different combos of flavors, like trying her on bits of veggies taken out of some warm veggie or chix soup. Do try them warm - mine seems to like that way better.

If you look in the recipe section, towards the bottom, you will see a recipe for 'lissa's kitchen sink rice and beans'..it's a great mix ( if I do say so myself) that's been tried and proved by lots of birdie lovers over the years. All of my fids eat it..I think there is probably only one or two birds I've run into that haven' t thought much of it over the years. A grey owner or two has used it for a post weaning food with much success....

If you decide to try it and have any questions, feel free to PM me.
