Pet Shop Health Program for Birds

Came across this site... thought it was interesting... maybe even a good reference?

Bird Health - Pet Shops - Health Programmes

Would certainly be nice if we could get something like that in ALL stores here in America!

That's what I like about you Monica! Eternal otimism.I'd be happy just to see birds go home with a toxin list, avian vet phone number[s],quarantine instructions and basic care booklet.Back in the 80's when I worked for a family run petshop I could talk a customer into any toy, food,or perch but they always balked at buying the book I'd sugest. This was before the internet mind you.Go figure!

LOL! Certainly know what you mean! When we were shopping for my very first "parakeet", we got corn cobb bedding, grit, and who knows what all else! Store told us we needed it, who was to say they were wrong??? Well, two weeks of as much internet time as I could get, researching!

Even in the early 2000's, there was still hardly any information on the internet about birds! Worse when you are trying to identify a bird and different sites say different things... or they may say the same thing but have different species listed! Or, they'd call two different species the same thing! I clearly know the frusteration there!

It's just that I've learned that sometimes it seems as if a business would rather hire an ignorant person so that they could mold them into the type of person they want instead of hiring someone who honestly knows better...

As Gbird can tell you from working at a pet "superstore"...You must give the prepakaged advice approved by "corporate" or risk getting your but chewed.I actually worked for a longstanding Mom and Pop place that encouraged knowledge. If our work was done and it was slow we were expected to be reading one of the many books on hand.Sadly after two generations and 40 years they were put out of buisness by a large discount petstore.

Tena, I already know! I have a friend who works in one of the major petstores... and his heart is practiclaly broken every day by how the employees care for the animals, or how they DON'T care once they are off the clock...

And truth be honest, I think that's one of the reason's why I wasn't hired at a petstore I applied at... because I KNEW better on how to care for the animals...
