Dave and I went to the Gabriel Foundation this morning to interact with our potential adoptees and see how they did with us when they weren't as food motivated. Ha. I think these guys are food motivated 24/7. I thought that the folks on BB would like to see the two 'hooligans' we will hopefully be taking hom this coming weekend, when their cages come in. We only need a few more things and I think we'll be set :-) Otherwise, they'd already be home with us and tearing our place up.
The first three are of Ira and the last two are of Bob. Note the heavy blue-factor in Bob's head feathers and Ira's preference for parking himself on your warm hands to keep his little claws toasty. Last edited by Abyssinian1; 10-29-2007 at 06:58 AM. |

Is that a conure or a jardine? There was a jardine at Saturday's Meet a Bird event that was just too gorgeous for words.
I put my application in for some of the cockatiels that just came out of quarantine. They were confiscated about two months ago. The Gabriel Foundation requires all potential adopters to take an 8-hour class. Silly me ... I thought that since I had years of experience and since the president of Gabriel knew me, I wouldn't have to take the class. Serves me right for being so cocky. |

i heard about the "new" class - it's offered for adopting smaller guys (which Ms. Peachy, a peach fronted conure, should easily qualify for). we went through the entire month-long online class... was fun, but time consuming (and bad timing for me
yeah, their adoption regulations are fairly strict

The class isn't all that bad - I've done online learning classes that put this to shame for the amount of time and involvement required. Besides, Ira and Bob are worth the time. Plus, a month really gives a person time to reflect on whether or not they can handle a new responsibility such as bird ownership. I mean, these are the first pets I've had in nearly... geez, has it been that long since my dog Katie
passed .... seventeen years or so. These guys are going to take up time and resources and we're going to have to work with them so that they fit in with the household. There are a couple of issues that I see looming that I will have to be very careful to avoid regarding their behavior. But that's to be expected. Besides, I learned a few things that I hadn't picked up while researching macaws, so I think it was worth it.Now how we are going to keep Dave in shoes with Bob around... that is the real question.

oh, i agree when it comes to the learning experience... however, in the light of the fact that i was writing my phd thesis at the same time, it did consume more time than i initially expected (working 12-14hr days followed by answering non-trivial questions about parrot keeping, health, physiology etc was a little much). i guess if i'd taken it a point in time when i wasn't as busy as then, it would have been less of a strain...
overall, it was a good online-class... very thorough

Ahhh! Someone willingly taking on not just one, but TWO, vampires at the same time?! Crazy! LOL!
I only say this 'cause my husband's Severe would rather drain a vein than be nice to anyone but Z :-). Congratulations.
