What was determined was that with her company they do not insure pets of any kind. In the case of a fire, only the value of the cages would be considered. She even looked about for carriers who would insure the birds on a separate policy. No luck. NO amount of money could replace any of my fids if they were lost in a fire. It was just a thought that came up because she asked us if there was anything of great value in our home that needed to be covered in the policy. To me, the most valuable thing that I have is my birds.

Really good question Miss Kim-Lynnn! I honestly had never thought of it. I'll be calling my guy to see what he says.

I thought I saw a post from Prince Dazzle asking about getting his own life insurance. Seems he had some concerns over injuries suffered from excessive snuggling.

I'm curious about this too. We also have a lot of money soaked up (no pun intended) in aqarium equpt. - once you get into salt water and huge tanks with huge lights, it gets pricey. But above & beyond that, the corals & so on aint exactly cheap, either. And then the birds, of course. And lizards, which my husband sometimes breeds for sale. So I had been wondering if our exotics could be insured, too. I just didnt think to post the question here. I'm glad someone did!

If an insurer does allow you to insure valuable exotics, I would love to know what their exclusions are, as well as what exactly they do insure. It seems like insurance companies have many small and interesting ways to avoid actually paying out should there be a claim brought forth. With the bad weather we've had around here, it's amazing how they find ways NOT to cover damages that would seem, on the top of things, to be obviously covered (i.e. Some policies won't cover damages caused by a tree falling on your roof in a storm, if there is water damage from rainwater, and you don't have "flood insurance" in addition to your normal policy--rainwater coming in and damaging your home in the area that the tree fell on it is apparently considered "flood damage"). Not that I don't think highly of insurance companies, ya know *smirks*

There are companies that specialize in insuring horses . . . perhaps they would be a good place to look to for info?

My birds are not expensive in the financial sense but they are priceless to me. I would like some kind of insurance that if they did go missing (God forbid) the insurance company pays for a full search campaign and reward to the finder.

Hi,
I just swapped carriers today as a result of this post. State Farm does indeed underwrite birds. You need pictures and receipts and it is not cheap but apparently my website convinced the underwriters of my honesty :) . My homeowners with full coverage and ~ 60,000 in personal items plus an additional 15000 in individually insured firearms, jewelry, books, and photographic equipment costs just slightly more than insuring Ariel and Merlin. Sure, nothing can replace my babies, I love them to death but 4000 dollars in macaws is nothing to laugh at. As far as I could tell the only exclusions were natural causes. Fire, theft, and smoke inhalation all counted.

THANKS FOR MAKING ME AWARE OF THIS

JARED

It nice to hear some insurance companies will cover birds, I may have to switch! I had asked out carrier last year about the birds...they said no right off. I asked them to consider the dollar value of the birds and eyebrows went up! My insurer had to ask the main office but still the answer was no.
