Does anyone have your birds insured?

I'm not talking about pet health insurance. I'm talking about insured against loss? I just updated my homeowners insurance policy and discussed the value of the birds with my agent. It was the first time anyone had asked her about insuring a valuable pet. She had to contact several people in her branch. What was determined was that with her company they do not insure pets of any kind. In the case of a fire, only the value of the cages would be considered. She even looked about for carriers who would insure the birds on a separate policy. No luck. NO amount of money could replace any of my fids if they were lost in a fire. It was just a thought that came up because she asked us if there was anything of great value in our home that needed to be covered in the policy. To me, the most valuable thing that I have is my birds.

Too weird. I was just getting on to post this same question. Lori and I were talking about this last night and I said I would ask here.

I was just thinking about that myself the other day. Having worked in the insurance company myself in the past, I don't know of any type of policy that would cover the lose of the fid, the only type of policy that I know of would be a farm policy or a policy of protecting yourself if your animal injuryed someone. I am looking into it too because I know that I have well over 7000 in just the value of my fids in market value (even though to me that would never cover their lose to me)

this is something that we discussed with our insurance agent before also. we also got the same answer, cages would be covered only. wonder if we have the same ins agency?

granted, money could never replace our family members. but the value of them when you consider can be quite a surprise. atleast our big guys are chipped.

I would imagine that it would be very difficult (if not impossible) to find an insurance company that would be willing to write a policy for companion birds. From their perspective, the chances for fraud are probably too great. If you had some extreamly valuable birds- hyacynth macaws for instance, you may be able to get a policy from a specialist company like Lloyd's of London. I would imagine that it would not be economically feasible for typical companion birds.

Things might be different for breeders, though. As someone mentioned it might be possible to get some sort of policy that covers livestock.

Yes, sir they are still kicking: http://www.lloyds.com/

And you are correct.. I believe they will insure almost anything. Of course, "almost anything" can require a large premium! hahaha!

I was also thinking about this topic the other day! But something i was also wondering was, Since i have a very odd hybrid should i find some place to appraise the value of him. Just incase something happens(theft or damage...that may result in a lawsuit) because i couldn't just go on the interenet and find an average price for him!

Maybe if we could find a place to insure them they would appraise for coverages!

ok. I inquired with my insurance State Farm a while back.
Yes, my birds can be covered, and will be since I am now married.
Problem was, the old house, and old insurance policy was in the finacee's name. Parrots are in my name. Couldnt insure them unless they were in the homeowners name at time of purchase.
The birds will be covered at the purchase price.
I now have the homeowners in my name, and they can be insured.
They would be covered against fire, theft, or means of that nature.
They would not be covered under death because of sickness or age.
Cages would be covered with the proof of purchase as well.

I also have health insurance on Miss Emma

Thanks for the responses. Lisa, congratulations, that you were able to get your birds insured. I use Farm Bureau. I wonder if there was more of a market, if more companies would cover companion animals?
