Ulitmately, it comes down to this: its up to the bird community to find a way of keeping the birds off of the transformers. FPL isn't gonna do. In fact, I can see where volunteers will wind up dying trying to climb up the poles to rescue the baby birds. Its a total nightmare.

Why cant people just set up some poles in a non obtrusive area? The quakers obviously like the poles and tranformers because of the stability they provide.. so rig up some poles and big old boxes (lol) that would (hopefully) attract the quakers.... I mean.. it seems like it MIGHT have a possibility of working....

I simply do not like FPL. I moved into a house on a golf course about 2 1/2 years ago. The trees were well overgrown onto the power lines. An inspector came out and said it was on the list but didn't know when. They STILL have not come out ! Meanwhile we had awful hurricanes in which of course our lines went right down due to the trees falling on them. I thought after that they would start trimming....Nope! We were out of power on 3 occasions due to storms. One time for 2 weeks. It was such a mess. We trimmed some ourselves, but others need heavier equipment. They recently raised everyones bills. To help with cost from hurricane disaster ? Well, ummmmm....why not do your part in maintenance first. Due to this I really don't think they care to do much for the birds. They certainly don't care about us !

A group in Brooklyn came up with a very clever solution and I don't see why it can't also be used in Florida. www.brooklynparrots.com Scroll down to the alternative nesting boxes they are making. They don't look expensive to make. The power companies can enclose the transformer section in some kind of bird proof cage. Or better yet, run cables underground, that way hurricanes can't blow them down either. It just makes me sick to think of these sweet, lovely birds being murdered like this.

There is an online petition to save the Quakers in Connecticut, is there one in Florida too? Please go in and sign if you haven't already! http://new.petitiononline.com/CTMonks/petition.html

If any one knows a petition for Florida please post a link here. If they get enough bad press, they will HAVE to do something.

Acutally, the appeal of the transformers is because they provide warmth.

Faith, thanks for posting that NJ petition, I just went in and signed, but I used my parent's address in California as I thought it would matter more than an Aussie address.

Joanie and everyone else, thank you so much for doing your part to help end this cruelty. These threads are not pleasant but we can't be ostriches and stick our heads in the sand while hundreds of innocent bright beautiful Quakers are being slaughtered.
