Exclamation Spoke with AV about Charm

Well Charm just isn't right, he is peeing every 5 mins and drinking alot of water. The AV just called me and we talked a long time. It looks like I'm going to have to bring Charm back in and do a Chemistry panel to make sure all organs are functioning properly. He is consuming alot of water which would account for the constant peeing but the question is...why is he drinking so much? When he does produce feces it looks normal so that is good. His crop is distended right now but the vet said as long as it's emptying after a rather short period of time then it's ok. I asked him what Joel asked me to ask, which was, "why did he put him on a contact only yeast fungal killer and not a systemic fungal killer" and he said because the Nystatin which is a contact only works on the surface of the digestive track for the overgrowth of yeast that was apparant in Charm's feces.

What can I say, it saddens me, I cannot sleep easy for a number of reasons. (1) Do I have a sick bird on my hands? Will he get better or is this an indication of what I'm in for with him? (2) I'm starting to shell out money for vet bills and medications and as you all know it's not cheap, but obviously part of owning a bird or animal but still not something I'm happy about, (3) I will be unable to introduce the other birds to Charm because I will have to quarantine much longer to ensure they don't get whatever it is that Charm has. (4) I have noticed an attitude change in Charm. He doesn't really play with toys as much and is very mellow. He is very needy of affection from me and seems sad. I feel like crying.

Does your state have a pet lemon law? I don't know if birds apply but it's worth looking into.

If you bought a sick cat/dog from a pet store, most states require that the store pay for the treatment and also the vet visit (providing something is wrong with the animal and the vet says the pet isn't healthy and therefore wasn't fit for sale).

You may have to look into which species are covered and how long you have to file a claim--but it's worth investigating.

I'm not sure but I did call the store that I got him and they will pay for medication but not the vet visit as one should have a well birdie visit regardless

that's good of them. From what I can find online, there is no protection for sick birds that are bought from pet stores.

That's scary if someone bought a $1000+ parrot.

Lori, I'm sorry to hear Charm isn't feeling well. I sure hope it's nothing serious and not too expensive to get Charm all better. I just went thru something similar with my Eclectus boy Jax. He was also running alot of water thru his system and feeling poorly. Jax is on Baytril and is already doing better. I hope it's something just as simple for your Pi.

Well Charm cost me $800 and I should have brought him to an AV right away because they do have a 7 day health guarantee but to be honest, I wouldn't have returned him unless I found out he was terminal when I got him, and even then I think I'd want his last days of life to have been with me and not in a cage in some pet store

I'm sorry hon. Hang in there. Hopefully it will be something really simple. The important thing is that you noticed something was wrong pretty darn quickly and its been caught. Dont worry until you have to. *big hug*

Well, then, his first visit should have been his well bird visit. They should be paying for this next one!

When I got my Senegal, he had a seed stuck in one of his nostrils. He had done this before in the store and it had fallen out, so we assumed after a day or so he would get it out. I said something about the seed when I bought him and they also seemed to think it would fall out. When I took him for his first visit, the vet said to wait and see if it would fall out. It wouldn't come out, so I brought him back later and had it removed. After having it removed, I went back to the store, gave them the bill, and explained the problem. The store paid for the second visit, not me.

Of course, he did come with a 14 day guarantee. After I purchased him, I left him at the store until the bloodwork came back OK, just in case he had something contagious. The second vet visit was still within the 14 days.
