Amazing!!! (caiques lovers will like this)

I have been having some pretty wonderful, but busy last two days so I had to share with everyone

On Wednesday, I had a fellow worker (Mr. Perry) call me from the Guidance Office (a department in the Army) and told me that a friend of his was interested in getting a bird and Mr. Perry wanted to know if it would be ok if he gave his friend my number. Of course I said sure. I ended up talking to Patty and Richard for over two hours that night. They are so nervous on getting the right fid for them that they wanted to talk to another bird lover. They are coming from Washington, PA to visit me on Saturday (which is about a 45 minute drive from me). We plan on going through my bird books, my computer, playing with my fids, and talking about birds period. Finally I get to have other bird lovers come visit me, I am so excited . And to top it off, I was so proud of myself that someone who knew me recommend me as a knowledgeable bird person and talked highly of me and my little aviary

Thursday, I had my oldest two daughters' parent teacher conference which turned out great. Both of their teachers said that I have very smart and well behaved children (no parent ever gets tired of hearing that ) and then after the conference I went home to play with the family (yeah dh was included ) I had a nice talk with David (TooLover's DH) which he is a hoot to talk with. He is very bad and will have you peeing yourself from laughing so hard in no time Then I decided to get Roxy and Riggs (my caiques) out to play in the living room with the rest of the family. I am telling you that my caiques never stop amazing me on how smart they are. I had both of them on a perch on one side of the room and then I was sitting on the couch on the other side of the room. I would hold my hand up in the air for them and I would yell one of their names and who ever I yelled for would fly to me. Yes I know that this sounds unbelievable, but there is more. Riggs was the first one that I called and he came right too me and Roxy stayed on the perch. I petted him and gave plenty of lovings and then I put him on the perch. Then I called Roxy, my female, over too me. She has become another one of my "mommy's shadow" fid She flew right to me and Riggs stayed right on the perch. I gave her lovings and then put her back. (during all of this the kids are playing, dh is watching TV, Max and Crybaby (my other fids) are on their perches in the living room, and I am trying to read an owner's guide book on Caiques. Now in my book, it stated that Caiques are in the top three types of most trainable birds around. I was already shocked that my little twins as I call them were able to come to me without be distracted from all of the other things in the room, but I wanted to see just how smart they really are. So I called Roxy and Riggs back to me individually again, but this time once I got them, I handed them to dh and I walked over to the perch where the other caique would be and I would yell for the caique that DH had and say "(whose ever name DH had) join (who ever was on the perch)". Of course they would then fly from DH to my hand that was in front of the perch. Did I stop there,,,,,OOOOOOOHHHHHHHHH NOOOOOOOOOOO I just had to go further. I continued this process for about 20 minutes. Of course this got the kids to settle down and watch and dh turned off the TV because he was amused himself (which is sometime a hard thing to do if it pertains to my fids ) So by this time I figured that they were getting tired of this little game so I put both of them on the perch and sat on the couch and started to talk with dh about all of this and how smart the caiques are when Roxy flew over to me again (I think that this was because I said her name ) so I sat there petting her once more and then I put my hand in the air and said once more "Roxy join Riggs” and can you believe it, she actually flew over and landed on the perch that Riggs was on. I was so astounded that I just had to try that with Riggs. Of course he flew to me when I called him, but he did not fly back to Roxy when told. (hey Rome was not built in a day right ). I then put Riggs on the perch beside Roxy and sat back on the couch. I called for Roxy and she came to me. I did the same routine of giving lovings and praises and then told her to join Riggs. Once again to my amazement she joined Riggs. Now how cool is that . And why is it that when a person gets their fids to do something really amazing, they forget to get the camera .

So tonight I plan on once again working with them on this little trick and who knows I may even try to get them to fly to other things like a different perch or to a family member!! Wish me luck on this training……..

Thank you very much- they need more books on caiques. I heard somewhere Sally Blanchard was writing a book on caiques- dunno if that is still going or not.
Do your guys talk?

Each one of them says hello, Riggs will say pretty, pretty and I finally got Roxy to say "how funny" but that is about it. My twins were intend to be breeders by the woman I got them off of, so they were never worked with as far as talking and training. But when they did not breed for her, I bought them as pets and I have been working with them ever since

Hey there Lady!
Good to hear from you. I'd been wondering what was up with you and was just about to PM you here in another day or so, if you didnt resurface. Glad to hear your parent/teacher conference went well! That's always a wonderful thing.

As for caiques - I dont know anything about them, but from what I've read on this board, I've become very interested in them, for sure! They sound absolutely delightful!

They are... LOL I call Higgins my two year old on a constant sugar high. Energizer bunnies on speed :)
They are the clowns of the parrot world- lots of people equate them with lories/lorikeets.
And dont believe for a second that they cannot talk- Higgins has a 50 word vocab, and I have heard other owners say their caiques have vocabularies as well.....
