Princess Parrot / Rock Pebbler

Does anyone currently own a Princess of Wales Parakeet? This species was suggested to me along with the Rock Pebbler. I'm looking for a quiet bird that has an interactive/fun personality. My husband sleeps during the day and therefore a quite bird is preferred. I've been looking at the Lineolated Parakeet which seems like a great choice but would also like to research these other two species since they were recently brought to my attention.

Questions: Do the POWs or Rock Pebblers use their feet to eat or play with toys like the larger parrots? Do they like to cuddle or be held? Are either one of them considered dusty like Cockatiels? Do they have a warbling or high pitched vocalization?

Thanks,
Becky

Beck:

Tara (Tiki), Michele (Humphrey's mom) and Tracy (Basketbagley) all have POWs and they just rave about them. I've met Tracy's Calypso and if I didn't have large parrots, I definitely have a POW. Its just too dangerous with 10 big birds in the house.

Yes, I have two Princess Parrots (that's what they are called in their native Australia). I am trying to encourage the use of the Aussie name as "POW" just makes me think of "prisoner of war" not a pretty little bird. You can see a pictorial I just did in Bird Talk called "Fahion Week at Birdboard" and I have lots of pics in the Parrot section of the Birdboard album. They are very gentle birds, don't fight with anyone and can be safely kept with cockatiels. They are also more independant than cockatiels and are totally fearless. I bring them in my room on weekends to keep them socialized and friendly. They walk all over me! They are not noisy at all and have a pleasant trilling kind of chirp. Mine are 2 and 3 months old, Tracy's is about a year and has started to talk. Not sure how old Michele's Humphrey is. They are not dusty like Tiels, I am not dust sensitive and have 9 Tiels and don't even notice it. Princess Parrots will cuddle if they feel like it. They like to chew, especially on books and magazines when they are out and they do like to play with Cockatiel sized toys. I strongly recommend them!

If you are fortunate enough to find a Rock Pebbler, you are in for a treat! I recently lost mine to Iron Overload Disease. The vet wasn't sure how or why she got it. They are really sure what causes it, especially in parrots. She was only 8 years old. Anyway, she was so sweet. My husband loved her because she was a quiet bird unlike the rest of our crew! She would coo more like a pigeon. Her nickname was the green pigeon. I never saw her eat with her feet or play with toys with her feet. She was a big fan of pizza crusts and mashed potatoes! I still miss her and have found difficulty in trying to locate a breeder of Rock Parrots. Good luck in your hunt for either a Princess or Rock Parrot. They are really sweet. She used love to cuddle and take baths. What a sweetie...

Thank you guys for the information & personal experiences. I'd like to meet one in person but neither species are common around here (Dallas, TX). Hopefully the bird stores might have some babies this spring.

Tiki,
You take phenomenal pictures....they're absolutely stunning! And that video was so entertaining! Do you make Princess movies often?

Misclaims,
I'm so sorry for your loss. She sounded like a wonderful companion & I love the nickname you gave her.

Outlaw,
Thanks for letting me know who the proud Princess owners are. I'd love to hear more about your first impression of Calypso.

Becky, thanks, I am glad you enjoyed them! I have a few video clips in the Multimedia gallery with all my birds.

What State are you in? Tracy (basketbagley) knows a good breeder in Maryland. I remember her saying there was still one gorgeous baby Princess left on sale, I was hoping someone on Birdboard would buy him so we can have another Princess Parront here. I can't remember the name of the breeder, when Tracy sees this she will tell you.

We live north of Dallas, TX.
I'd like to have my husband see a Princess Parrot in person before buying one.
