In case you wanted to know where Cuttlebone comes from

Introducing the Cuttlefish. Kinda looks like a cross between a squid and an octopus.

Wow- that's pretty cool! I guess I never really thought of where it came from...I never would have guessed a squid-type thing!

Cuttlefish are neat creatures. I stood and watched a couple of them for quite a while at OceanWorld at Manly Beach near Sydney last fall.

Cuttlefish are also highly intelligent and very aggressive. The actual cuttlebone that we use for calcium supplements for our birds is actually a floatation device of sorts for the cuttlefish, making them more buoyant.

Makes you wonder how many cuttlefish are "farmed" each year to provide us with cuttlebones...?

Cuttlefish bones wash up on beaches all the time. They die, the crabs and bottom feaders eat the meat, leaving the boyant bone to float to the surface and get carried in on the tide.

You can make your own by collecting the bones from the local beaches, cleaning them and boiling them if you want to.
