'Tiel fly??

I was just wondering if anyone knew of a method of getting your bird to fly. I have a very large room which is perfect for my tiel to fly around in. Yet, I can't get him to fly.

What I always see in movies is they kind of jolt the bird up when it's on their finger. I tried this, but my little Lucky just hangs on for dear life.

If anyone has any suggestion, I would appreciate it.

Thanks

Don't force it. Try "baby steps". Stand close to the cage and get the bird to "jump" to you. Then give it a treat. When it's comfortable, you can move a little further back and then keep moving back as it gets stronger. If it hasn't used the muscles, they won't be as developed as a bird that flies every day.
Are you sure you're ready for the responsibility of a flighted bird? Weigh all the pros and cons before you decided to let your 'tiel fly free in the house.

has your bird grown in its flight feathers from having been cliped? has it ever flown or been alowed to fledg, most breeders do not let them fledge out so they do not know they can fly, and if they do not know how can harm themselves by forcing them to fly let him learn on his own, only you havew to do extra things to make sure your baby is protected, no open containers where they can not fly out of or holding water too deep, pots on a stove with hot ingredients open toilets, all kinds of things. if you want them to fly you need a area designed with that in mind and bird safe. :D

all of mine are full flighted and never been cliped that includes the big bird as well/

You can try gently tossing the bird onto a pillow or bed only a foot away, and take a step or two back once a week, or getting the bird to jump to its cage, or to you from somewhere else. I've tried these two methods on a budgie and a conure... I was able to get the budgie to fly once again, though the conure doesn't really care to jump anymore and still is unable to fly, though I see this as no problem!

The other thing I just read in a Mattie Sue Athan book that a good exercise for parrots is 'flapping". You hold the bird on your finger or arm, and the gently but swiftly bring your hand down. The bird should flap his wings. She said this is great exercise for sedentary parrots, but I wonder if it would encourage flying? She also said to sensitively "toss' the bird onto the bed or to the cage, so he flies the last few feet, even if he's partially clipped.

To get my babies to fly I just had them on my hand/arm then dropped my arm like an elevator. This causes them to lift their wings. If they cannot fly they will land back on your arm. Try it while sitting on a carpeted floor. That way they won't have a hard landing should they land on it.
