vets and keets

So i called around to the vets in the area that treat birdies because I finally got a little cash that doesn't have a definate home to go to, and they all told me it was unneccessary to bring him in for a check up. In fact, one place told me that it wouldn't be worth the trouble to bring in the keet for a check up because they are so cheap that you can "just go out and buy a new one if it dies". needless to say, i will NEVER bring an animal to that place... but I know there's nothing wrong with my little ducky. I just wanted to be *sure* ya know?

Unfortunately your vet's reaction is a reflection of the attitude most people have about the less expensive birds like budgies. I have taken my budgies to the vet and the price was more than 10x the amount I paid for the bird. I don't worry about the cost because I wanted to get him checked out & vaccinated. Are there any other avian vets within a reasonable distance of your home?

You got a very poor response... wow! Keep looking for an avian vet in your area. You never know when you will need them (outside of checkups).

I think it's good that you want to take your budgie in for a checkup, I just took mine in recently.

It angers me to think that people place less value on these little birds. They are SO smart and have a huge personality packed into a tiny body. Jerry has completely stolen my heart in every way and it would break my heart to think that others think any less of him because he "only" cost 20 dollars to purchase and he is small in comparison to most birds.

Yes, his vet checkup was a lot in comparison to how much he cost, but we put in so much extra into all of our animals, the cage, toys, food. Even if you buy a bird that is relatively cheap, you still put a lot of money into all of the supplies. And I think it is worth every penny.

I wonder what that vets response would be to a "free puppy" you brought home , how about a litter of kittens ? Not the same I bet. I would keep looking and find one that cares. My vet charged $35 for a well bird visit. I thought that was pretty cheap and it gave me peace of mind that she was healthy.

a friend of mine got a bugie for free at petco. aparently someone found the bird in their backyard. soon after she took home the FREE bird it got sick. she spent well over a hundre dollars to nurse her back to health and had to visit more than 1 vet. but the bird is still alive. isnt that what really matters? its wonderful that you are being a good bird owner. keep up the search for a great vet. and on behalf of your fid thank you.

Shortly after we got our 3rd budgie, our cats knocked down his cage and batted him around a bit. He ended up with a scrape on his head that got infected, so to the vet he went. His visit was $42 for the office visit, lab work and meds. More than twice what we paid for him, but getting a new bird couldn't have replaced him.

The folks at that vet office should be ashamed of themselves.

That's deplorable. That vets office shouldn't even be in business if that's how they operate. They're supposed to be there to treat sick animals, not to recommend letting one die and purchasing a replacement. I wonder if they think of humans that way, too. That's a disgusting attitude.

My vet has no trouble charging me hundreds of dollars on my $3 rats and mice! But seriously, my vet treats my rats and mice just as well as she treats my cats, with equal respect and care, and I think that should go without saying. Definitely find a new vet who does not put dollar signs over the animals' heads...

I am wondering.....Was it the receptionist that said this or the vet ? If it was the receptionist I would let the vet know. They may not know that she is saying this and it may be her opinion only . I would want someone to tell me if I was the vet thats for sure !
