Question Whats with parrots eyes?

Does anyone know why a parrots eyes dilate when they speak? Gypsy is starting to say "hello" and her eyes dilate to pin drops when she does. This is really weird, kinda freaky even. ~giggles~ I wonder what causes it? Is it just my bird? Maybe is just me???

all I have heard about that is a bird does that when it is interested in something. Kind of like concentrating.

I've also read that it indicated a bird's emotions, good or bad. When I come home from work, Humphrey's eyes go crazy. She's veryhappy to see me and jumps in my lap.

You should see the eyes on any IRN. They are constantly "pinning" getting all little and pinned then back open up.

I am used to it now, but it is freaky hey...and i am glad us peoples eyes don't do that, although maybe we could read people better then!!

Only my IRNs eyes do that none of my other fids do. Neat topic :)

I always get real nervous when I meet an Amazon for the first time and it does that--I've met too many cranky ones, I guess :-).

Bob pins his eyes when he's excited, or when he's p'ed off at me for taking too long meeting his demands of the moment. I prefer it when he does it when he's excited and happy--right now (age 8 months tomorrow) he's going through a beaking/testing thing to see just how much crapola he can get away with. Kinda like my kiddos when they were about 3....

I can't see either Pete or Gracie pinning (their eyes are dark). Evil Eddie does it a lot, though, and with me, it's never a good thing, especially when the feathers on the top of his head go up, he hunches down and forwards, and that beak opens up. Psycho bird!

Both the Senegal and the Illigers Macaw eyes pin when they are excited. With the Senegal we know that when his eyes "pin" that he doesn't like something. Or something is a miss to him. The Illigers she does it when excited. When she's playing her eyes are "pinning" all the time.

We've learned that when the Senegal pins that we need to leave him alone. He's not a ladies bird so my wife has to watch what she does around him when he's out.
