Unhappy Avian Vet

Okay, you guys can shoot me -- but I don't have an avian vet. I want to find one. I have taken my bird to the vet after he came to live with me. He was treated for a yeast infection which I hoped would cure his feather plucking and his feathers would grow in -- they did not.

Anyway, I am located in Southern California -- does anybody in Souterhn California know of a good Avian Vet? I am located in Pasadena so one as close to me would be great.

I think I want to take Ducky in for a really good check-up but not sure where to take him. Also, I want to start taking him in for a yearly checkup. After joining this board, I realize that this is necessary as well as daily weighings.

We won't shoot you unless you don't go to the vet now! But we're thrilled that you're willing to expand your knowledge!

Here's a link to veterinarians who belong to the Association of Avian Vets. Key in your information to find someone who is local: Find your local Avian Veterinarian

Belonging to AAV doesn't necessarily mean the vet is a GOOD avian vet, just that the interest is there or that the vet is looking for new clients. But we undoubtedly have a lot of SOCAL members on this Board who will offer personal assistance on their choice.

Ok, you are in an area that seems to be pretty well known as having breeders and exotic bird markets. So I have a suggestion for you that may just be a life saver for you and also get you "hyper active" in the exotic/parrot bird community. You need to find and maybe become a part of a local bird club.

Here's a helpful link to get you started: California Online Bird Clubs

The information and recommendations obtained from such organizations can be priceless in find the resources you need/want to help insure you have a long and healthy relationship with your feathered friend. Again just a suggestion. I'm sure we'll find some people on the board that have had un undesirable experience with a bird club... so I guess this would be a good time to hear them so that you can make a decision.

There is a very good pet hospital in Monrovia. It is off the 210 freeway at the Huntington exit. It's called Huntington Pet, Birds & Exotics Hospital. Actually, they've changed ownership recently, but I'm pretty sure the new owners are good too.

Sydney's AV, Dr. Larry Nemetz, is the greatest. He's located on Tustin Ave in Orange. We would drive a few hours if we had to to visit him.

He is very gentle with Sydney..explains everything to us in plain language..even draws diagrams if necessary!

He's been on the cutting edge as far as heart disease, diabetes, liver disease in birds. He lectures at a couple of universities, as well as to his collegues. He's testified in court as an expert in bird abuse cases.

All said, we would not take Sydney to another AV!!

Pasadena is not that long of a drive to Orange.

Well, tomorrow Ducky is going to the vet. Something is very wrong with him and I can't figure out what. He has an eye problem and is keeping his right eye closed as much as possible. It's getting red on the skin around his eye and the left eye is starting to get red as well.

I am really, really worried. He is eating but I am making sure he eats healthy as I am hand feeding him with a spoon.

Maybe when you bring him/her home, get a heppa air filter to help clear anything out of the air that might have gotten into his eye. Just a suggestion. We have several air cleaners thru-out our home to help keep the dander and other stuff out of the air.

Wash all it's perches very well and let them dry before re-introducing them to the cage. Maybe do the same for all it's toys. I'd go as far as actually getting some anti-bacterial/dis-infecting soap and really wash that cage down and really rinse it off to get rid of maybe some lingering bacteria. If you have faberic toys... Well maybe consider if they could be carring the cause of the problem.

Smoke can be the issue as well (honestly, if you smoke, please put your bird up for adoption, I don't mean to sound rude, but you're killing the bird - there's no such thing as a safe place for a bird around a smoker). That's all I'm gonna say about smokers, as I'm sure we have smokers with birds on this board and they'll come back with some bashing and probably some defensive/offensive remarks.

Very important: Isolate/Quarantine this animal from all your other pets/birds. This is imparative to keeping your other animals healthy. You just want to eliminate the possibility of spreading the problem to your other pets/family members. Get yourself some anti-backterial/dis-infecting hand wash (that clear hand stuff made mostly of alcohol) that evaporates instantly and use it (everyone use it in your family) before and after every contact with your bird (and any other animals).

I think you get my hint. Clean it all - vigorously. Food dishes (maybe consider boiling them), examine all food (including treats and what you keep in the fridge) and do your best to eliminate those that you think could be causing the problem, toys (boiling maybe), perches (replacing maybe). Get some air cleaners - maybe one with a heppa and carbon filter as it'll absorb bateria and allergens and smells better. We have forced air (furnace) heating in our home and even put special heppa filter cartridges into those vents so that the heating doesn't spread dust/mold, etc into the home any more than what we can keep up with.

Give your dog a bath and ask your vet maybe about the cat or dog being the cause/carrier and what can be done. Ideas, ideas, all I can suggest is preventative ideas for maybe some stuff. Maybe your vet will have more. Especially note anything new you may have introduced to the home and let the vet know of it, as they may have ideas as to what was the introducing factor.

If I'm forgetting anything please let me/them know. If I'm over doing it (can you really over do it, I mean anything right now could be the cause) then sorry for that. I just don't know the nature of the living conditions of your fine feathered fellow.
