I agree. I know that you are still reeling from the demise of your special girl, but perhaps you can help this couple find their destiny.

That is so heartbreaking hearing him calling for Leila and looking for her too. Poor guy. :(

Yehuda:

I know exactly what you mean. Every single day of my life I am in total awe of their perfection. And to think that I get to share that special bond with these exquisite creatures. There is something that puts the mind on overload when you open up a door and see before you 4 lovely BGs all just as excited to see you. I don't think I'll ever get tired of looking at them.

That's why I was so upset when you lost your Leila last week. You did everything by the book, and still she's gone. I guess we will never be able to control all of the variables no matter how hard we try.

I surely hope that your new hen will help fill the void of your grieving male. It must be heartbreaking to hear his entrities.

BG is so gorgeous and it breaks my heart how he must be missing Leila. I hpoe he likes the new bird and she helps to fill the void. At least you are giving another bird a good home, it is wonderful that you can do that so soon when you are still grieving.

This happened to me last year, my Tiki bird lost his male, Ariki (Maui's mother) last year but he quickly turned his attention to Taina. Maybe birds are more (what's the word) flexible? adaptable?

Don't mean to rain on anyones paprade and I am certainly NOT an expert on breeding but to me it seems cruel , unless the birds automatically take to one another, to take a bird that has always been a pet and turn it into a breeder. What are everyone else's thoughts on this? It just seems the reason domestically hand reared birds are taken away from their parents at such an early age is to imprint them to humans and that to raise it for its entire life with humans as their sole companions only to one day decide for your own reasons that the bird should now start to act like a bird and not receive the companionship its known and expected all its life, seems cruel. I think there are 2 kinds of birds in captivity - birds that were raised to be breeders and those that are raised to be companions, this bird was clearly raised to be a companion and laying eggs which is normal shouldn't relegate it to become a breeder especially since its clearly bonded to a human, not another bird. I see nothing wrong with introducing them and seeing where they choose to take it themselves but I would be prepared to have 2 companions if they decided they weren't interested or compatible. Best of luck.

Cindy:

I couldn't disagree with you more. In fact, many birds would PREFER a feathered mate. I admit, it can be confusing for a while, but where do you think MOST breeding birds come from? Often, they are sexually frustrated pets whose owners simply cannot fulfill what their pets need. I think its far more cruel to allow a bird to mutilate itself and become psychotic because it was once a pet. Also, for the record, not all of its homes will be wonderful. Statistically, that's a fact. I think that for any bird that needs a mate to be offered the opportunity to have one is probably the greatest gift we can give them. However, I have a problem with trying to find good homes for so many baby birds. Once you set up pairs, they will continue to reproduce for many, many years. Simply taking down a nest box doesn't stop the drive to raise a family. As I've said a thousand times, this is zoology. Make no mistake. These are not domesticated housepets.
