Expert egg advice needed

How can you tell if a lovebird has a soft-shelled egg or just a fatty deposit? We've been having a lot of trouble with Zen lately (as you may know) and she's been storing fat after laying the eggs and I honestly can't tell the difference. I have no problem taking her to the vet, but I'd like a better idea of what to check for so we're not running there every other day and stressing her out.

Usually, if there is an egg in there, you can see a bit of it by looking at the clocoa. Of course, it's not always accurate and you might be best served ( and Zen too) by taking her to the vet. I've not had to deal with any of our hens having a soft shelled egg, but we did lose our sweet Bonnie last year due to a ruptured liver, which appeared to be just her being heavy with an egg.
