Yes, they do need grit. They eat seeds whole...shell and all. Also make sure his water is deep, so he can stick his whole beak into it. They suck water up through their beak like a straw.
Also, if he has been scratched or bitten he should really be taken to a wildlife rehabber so he can be put on antibiotics. They will know how to take care of him. It's possible he could die very quickly from an infection if the skin was broken. I'd also be afraid of what he could pass on to my birds, even if he is not right next to them.

I'm fidless now. I will be for quite sometime. His skin was good. Looks like it was an old runin with something. I noticed some pin feathers growing back, and I was going to chuck that old travel. I saw no mess of dove feathers near by. Could of been a cat or a lucky run in with the sparrowhawk. My tiel had passed a couple of weeks ago, (seed cups and travel were gonna be trashed), but the dove seemed to like the seed I offered. I mixed the grit in with the seed so the poor thing can find it. This is least so he can steer. We have a porch that's seperate from the house, and I have him there...normal temperatures...minus cat, hawk, and car problems. the water is nice and deep too for him. But taking offered food always seems to be a good sign. It's an adult bird, and these guys always went bonkers for that stuff. As for the grit I got that. I may have to call our local bird lady who knows her doves.
I've considered maybe placing him outside somewhere safe, but the poor dear can't steer or get much altitude. It'd be like a plane's tail getting messed up...can't go up, can't go down, and can't go anywhere.

Anything sent to the Pennsylvania SPCA has a slim chance seeing stuff gets sent to Philadelphia Animal Care and Control
. I found one in Ambler that deals with these types of birds...Not familiar with the area, so hopefully they can pick the guy up. I'll donate the little travel cage to'em and the box of grit I bought. :)

Sorry didn't know that in your area. Guess ours is different. You are very kind to be doing this. |

I was watching a band of Starlings probe the lawn for grubs from my bedroom window, and as if they were saying something...I pulled my blinds up, and saw this poor ball of brown feathers there with these guys. I went to see if I could get him in my socks, and had no success. So I went to eat dinner, and I bothered me to let this small creature that likely had a close call with the neighbor's cats...WHOM I TOLD SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED TO ROAM....Grrrr...Her cats were responsible for a pair of tolerant mockingbirds who 'owned' our supply of rasins dispise...not to mention the poor squirrels, rabbits, and other furry/feathered critters who frequented our yard. So I went again to get him this time he got himself through the link of a chainlink fense...i had a washcloth with me for when i had'em. He fell into a potter and I managed to get him.
I managed to get him calm, and brought him into the shed where the old travel cage was. I haven't had to take one of these guys in awhile. What a pretty little bird...so well designed to blend in compared to some of our FIDS who must look like aliens to these guys. For such a drab little bird there's some very light irradesent purple feathers around the nape. I'll be happy if he/she opts to coo in the morning. The left over cockatiel seed was a definate treat. Swallowed up some of the sunflower seeds as if deprived of food. I made a quick run to Petsmart and was made even more angry....they had a POOR baby Sun Conure who couldn't pearch, but the pearch was too damn high...he couldn't climb up the grate of the cage. They had two cockatiel hens who had resulted to eating poop as there was NO food in the cages. I wasn't too happy to spend money there either....:((((( That poor conure...the poor little Lovebirds, budgies, and other FIDs who have to endure that treatment.

Philadelphia, up in the Northeast. I never liked Petsmart..Petco seemed to be better, but I have no idea why Petsmart is allowed birds. I've seen a poor CAG with missing toes in that place before. There was a male ekky who used to addore me when I came in. I did talk to him. It's not his fault he wound up there same for the CAG, GW Macaw, and I think they had a U2 there also. Petsmart I know is not allowed to have anymore large parrots. Nothing any larger than a conure...still a FID is a FID. I told the girl in there that pearch should be lowered, and I was looked at as if I was crazy.
