Questions, questions, questions.....

Thanks in advance for taking the time to read my questions! Ok, here we go....

1. When I bring my baby home I need to take it to an initial vet visit, right?

2. What exactly should be done at this visit? I've read that they need blood draws, what else?

3. Worming... should they do this on it's first visit? Is there a certain age the baby needs to be before worming? I've read that your bird can have worms even if the vet doesn't think they do and you should have it done anyways....

4. Are CAGs clumsy when they're babies too? Do I need to place boxes at the bottom of it's cage? (I've been reading the post on bringing home a baby macaw...I'm assuming it applies to CAGs too.)

5. About how often do you clip wings?

6. Do I need to bring my own scissors/clippers to the vet? If I do, do you think it's an insult to the vet that I have doubted their clippers/scissors being sanitary? For a while I'm going to take my baby to the vet to have it's wings clipped until I feel comfortable enough to do it, and when I know my baby will feel comfortable with me doing it. I know there's the debate about letting your bird learn to fly, but I really don't have that option. I have child locks at the top of all my doors, but it only takes me forgetting the child lock one time, and my toddler opening the door one time... ya know?

I think that's all for now...
Thank-you so much for any answers I get, and for the time it took to respond. I just want to be super ready for my baby when he/she comes home... in July.

Fledging for an AG is a good thing. It helps build up confidence, and it helps with the clumsiness issues. If you don't have these books already, and as someone looking into buying a TAG...Get The African Grey Parrot Handbook by Mattie Sue Athan and For the Love of Greys off amazon.com. These are GREAT books to have....If anyone has any other reading suggestions. I'd appreciate it..I also have a Guide to a Well-Behaved Parrot too. :)

Thanks for the recommendations. I just ordered them! They got really good reviews. I was wanting to buy a book, but there's really a lot out there to choose from! I ordered the Bird Talk magazine as well.

1. When I bring my baby home I need to take it to an initial vet visit, right?
--Yes, all new birds should get a health check

2. What exactly should be done at this visit? I've read that they need blood draws, what else?
--Test for diseases, blood tests, poop test, body check.

3. Worming... should they do this on it's first visit? Is there a certain age the baby needs to be before worming? I've read that your bird can have worms even if the vet doesn't think they do and you should have it done anyways....
--Only if he tests positive for worms or was raised outdoors. Indoor birds rarely get worms.

4. Are CAGs clumsy when they're babies too? Do I need to place boxes at the bottom of it's cage? (I've been reading the post on bringing home a baby macaw...I'm assuming it applies to CAGs too.)
--Most baby birds are clumsy no matter the species.

5. About how often do you clip wings?
--When they molt and grow new feathers, roughly every 6 months. Have the vet teach you first.

I have child locks at the top of all my doors, but it only takes me forgetting the child lock one time, and my toddler opening the door one time... ya know?
--They should be sterilizing the scissors between patients

Hope this helps somewhat! Congrats on the new Fid!

Thank-you so much for taking time to answer my questions! I really appreciate it! I figure it's better to ask now, before my baby gets here, so I'll be ready!!! Hope my books get here quick!
