Toys

Ive seen the forum on gym, but I would like to know things on toys for my parakeets to play with and not get bored with. I saw some at the store the other day, but it was highly overpriced, like 20 dollars for some rope.

Do you guys know what things parakeets like to play with? Have you guys mad any? Please share.

I make a bunch of toys and a big favorite seems to be foam beads and pony beads on some hemp rope. This is a favorite of different sizes of birds. I make all of my toys because they are so expensive to buy. Paper towl rolls on help string is good and so is adding machine tape.

Shoe laces are good for rope, with parakeets - clean of course

Garage sales might have the odd toy that you could use - cleaned again . One of my students has a bird & she has been very successful at the garage sales.
Dollar stores might have some beads & hemp/jute/unbleached cotton rope.
Party stores will have streamers - but I'm not an expert on the safety issues there. Children's/party stores may have some cool items.
Plexi pieces make pretty 'beads'. Hand cut & drill holes for threading.

The larger bird owners have been talking about stainless steel chain links - nice & noisy & fun to take apart.

Food toys -- where the food is theaded thru metal or hemp. bowls of stones with food mixed in to create a foraging toy..........

hope these ideas will be helpful - unless you want your place 'junky' keep to a colour theme &/or keep changing the toys.
Kind of depends what your birds like to play with.

Mine like those rolls of Shredders. I cut them in two inch lengths, string them on a length of stainless steel wire in between pony beads. They love it. They also like those mini alphabet blocks, I bought some on ebay that were already drilled. I use individual strings from a brand new cotton mophead to string them on. Swings are a fav, and bells. I'll have to see if I can rustle up a few pics, remind me in a day or two if I forget!
