Does anybody know what kind of bird this is?

My mom saw this bird on the side of the street and took it home with her because it was hurt, and we don't know what it is.

My first thought is a female pileated woodpecker. The feet show two toes forward and tow toes backward and that would fit in with a woodpecker plus the coloring is a dead give away too.

I would take it to a Vet if it is hurt.
If you find out what it is for sure let us know. Hope everything works out.

Is this a fledgeling? Parents should be close by and will usually continue to take care of the bird. I would just put him in a safer area near where he was found. Can't tell you what kind he is though.

He's a northern flicker. I've seen those around here. I'll post a page from my bird handbook in a minute. Just gotta scan it.

Here it is...hopefully you can read it.

Well, doesn't look like it, but you can see the pic of it anyway...

Bird ID

That is a Flicker, part of the woodpecker gang. Good luck with the rehab, he looks like he needs lots of TLC. He probably won't eat seeds, They feed on grubs and insects. I would cover that cage and let him rest until you can locate an avian vet or wildlife rehabilitator. Poor bird, I rescued a female cardinal off the middle of a very busy street last week. I kept her in a shoe box and left her alone, after a bit of rest she was ready to be released and I freed her. Sometimes they just get stunned, but more often suffer internal injuries etc, that don't kill them immediately. Best of luck!

Things have gotten a little better.

We got this instant baby bird feed, and managed to get her to eat some of it...then she actually started flying around a little and sat on my shoulder for a while.

We're still taking her to a rescue that's near us tomarow but it looks like she'll be alright.

And thanks for the help everyone, especially poi for the scan.

Parrot handfeeding formula is meant for parrots... not wild birds... it would be a good idea to see if she'd take any meal worms (from a reptile or petstore shop) instead.
