Help! Parrots and fly strips!

Caesar flew off of his cage and into a flystrip. Now he has the sticky crap all over his feathers. The first thing I did was put him in the shower but I"m not sure if that was the right thing to do or not. I called the vet and they said to try washing him with diluted dish soap, which I tried to do but Caesar would not let the washrag near him. He let me get him wet and he let me pick him up but he will not let me near him with the rag. The vet didn't know if the fly strip stuff was toxic or not and the only thing I can think of at the moment is to trim all of his feathers and I need hubbys help for that and he's not here. Anyone have any other ideas?

I would recommend putting some Dawn dishwashing liquid into a spray bottle with some warm water (closer to cool). Try misting the bird until its drenched. Allow the detergent to work for about 5 minutes and then shower them until the water isn't foamy.

I don't think the glue is toxic, however its a mess. In the future, try placing the fly strips in old bird cages with the doors closed. It keeps the birds out.

Thanks Outlaw. It was kinda in a corner and hubby moved it to directly above the kitchen sink. For some reason Caesar likes flying right to the sink every once in a while. I have no clue why hubby moved the strip. He obviously wans't thinking. I heard from Hubby a few minutes ago and he said that he specifically bought it because it wasnt' toxic so at least he is thinking about that stuff now. I'm getting him trained. However, Caesar literally runs away from the spray bottles and I dont have and Dawn. I'm getting suggestions of using peanut butter too. I'm still trying to decide which one to do. Either way hubby has to stop at the store on the way home. One of us would have to hold him to spray him with the dishsoap but that sounds like the easier way to do it. Thanks so much! I feel alot better knowing that its not toxic. That's what I was really worried about. I'm still worried but I at least feel better.

Just some helpful info....when i spray down one of my guys i dont point it at him and mist it i try to hold it below high and spray into the air and let it fall on him.

I am not sure if it makes a big deal but then he may not feel "attacked" by it!

Why not put soap on the hand and slightly rub into feathers??? Of course soap and birds don't go together, but its kind of unavoidable if you want to remove the sticky stuff....

I tried that but the minute he sees the bottle he books. Turns his back on me and literally waddles away. Its quite funny, actually.

I didn't try that. I thought about it but I was worried about having too much soap that it wouldn't come off. Your right though....no choice. As soon as hubby gets home we are going to work on it.

The peanut butter actually works! I had a lovebird get stuck on a glue trap once and used peanut butter to get him unstuck. Worked like a charm and it's not toxic at all.
