Wow! That truly sucks! I cannot imagine a ZOO being so stupid. Thanks for the heads up.

Really, I'm disgusted by this. I've sent them an email, just to get it off my chest.

If anyone else wants to, here is the addy.

It seems totally irresponsible that zoo administrators would not listen to their own vet, would disregard the positive test results, and should put the money-generating potential of this exhibit over the health of any bird and the risk that it could become infected, whether it be their own exhibits, the travelling exhibit, or visitors' own birds. Not only is it irresponsible, it's also really, really bad PR. I wouldn't step foot in that zoo if I lived across the street and someone paid me $1000.

Wow. I don't know what to say. That is just unbelievable! I wonder how often this happens and we don't hear about it? We fight so hard to make sure our birds aren't exposed to things like this and they expect people to
pay for the chance to expose thier birds to PBFD.

Makes me want to reconsider visiting the Philadelphia Zoo...I haven't seen the new ape house and I want to see the cats now that they redid that. And the poor elephants before we loose'em. I may avoid the birds though...

Stunned by the stupidity

I guess these stories are the proof about IQ's sharply dropping....

First we have that Turkey adopting that Baby Grey Owl, and the Wildlife biologists let die.

http://www.lagrandeobserver.com/news...?story_no=9098

As trained WB's, they should know better than anyone that the last to hatch is quite often pushed outta the nest or killed & consumed by it's larger siblings.
This is very likely what happened to that chick and the WBs should have realized this and immediately brought the chic in to a rehabber.
(No offense to anyone actually there, but no reject from a thanksgiving dinner woulda stopped me from taking that chic from it's misguided guardian and moving it much closer to it's real parents!)

Now we have the Zoo Adminstrators demonstrating multiple level of insanity because they are more concerned about the money.

Quote:
The zoo knew about the problem before importing the creatures but decided to go ahead with the heavily promoted June 8 opening of the interactive exhibit, in which birds in a walk-in aviary land on visitors who lure them with millet-coated feed sticks.
So they knowingly imported infected birds.

Quote:
A day after it opened, a wordy sign was erected that includes this sentence: "If anyone has a parrot, parakeet or similar bird at home that is not feeling well today, we would ask that you not enter the exhibit today."
I find it absolutely outrageous that they want people to make sure they don't infect any exhibit animals with anything the clients pets have....
but they obviously don't give a damn if the sick birds infect their entire flock or any of the patron's pets.

Knowing that there are people like that "in charge", it really makes me fear for the future of our world.

You know there is a lot of closing the barn door after the horses have gone attitude. Look at all the mad-cow stuff but little is done about the outbreaks of TB. Our country's cattle industry is on its knees because someone who was smart actually did something about the sick animal. But even though no mad cow was found in anyother part of our coast to coast country (until another recently i believe) everyone suffered.
Are these people aware that every bird in your country could be at risk???????

If you're concerned about your local Zoos - I'd send them all an email with that article attached & ask for a responce + do a follow-up.

I'm sitting here with my mouth open - horrified at people's criminal carelessness & compassionless attitude to everyone & their innocent animals.

These people should be charged.

PS - thank you Dani - you are a great help to pass this info on & out
