my conure is addicted to Gummi Bears!
This must be like birdie crack!
Anyway, I was wondering if these things are OK for birds to eat? I know they shouldn't have too much because it's junk food, but I was curious if they would cause digestive problems, etc. I let my birds have a few bites but they want more. Anyone know if they can cause problems? |

Geez people It's not like I fill their food bowls with the damned things!
I like gummi bears - and apparently my birds do too. i eat them every few weeks and any time they come out the conure goes nuts for some. I realize they aren't anything other than sugar - but you should see this damned bird, the poor guy just wants a few nibbles. And I hate to tell you but there is sugar in a lot more than you'd think. maybe I shouldn't give him fruit either? My primary question was if the texture/consistency was bad for their digestion. Both get fed a balance of seeds, pellets, and people food. I honestly don't think a few nibbles of a gummi bear is going to hurt them. |

Fruit has natural occuring sugars and benifical things. Gummie Bears have everything that does not exist naturally. Processed sugars are terrible for FIDs and humans alike.

however, as befreak pointed out, there's a significant difference between the sugar that's added to a lot of things (simple sugars) compared to what's found in nature which is usually more complex sugars. you can find treats for birds, that are quite similar in texture to gummi bears, in various flavor at common petstores. that would be a possible alternative. based on that, i'd assume that the texture and consistency isn't bad for them. also, conures benefit a lot from fresh veggies in their diets (especially green veggies, and vit A carrying veggies and fruit)

I've been listening to too much Doctor Oz on Ophra but he has a point when it comes to diet. To be honest I stopped eatting gummie stuff and tried it again only to feel sick to my stomache.

i would say no just because i would be afraid that the gummie bears being the consistency they are could very very easily impact the birds crop, ultimately choking it to death. cheese in too large of a quantity could do the same thing. if you do give your birds a little bit of it every now and then just make sure you keep an eye on them for a little while afterwards. if a birds crop is impacted or approaching so it will start yawning a lot to try to clear it out.
