Just Curious

I'm just curious what everyone uses to clean their birds cages?

We used to use poop off but it was getting really expensive and switched to Avicine 2% Chlorine Dioxide Solution. I really think think this works great and it is a lot cheaper than buying poop off.

I use poop off, too. If there's a cheaper solution...I sure could use the recipe! Where can you get the stuff you mentioned?

Ladies:

Do yourselves a favor and forget Poop Off. It smells bad anyway. For the better result with no odor and being actually edible, switch to Grapefruit Seed Extract. I prefer the liquid to the powder. You simply fill a quart spray bottle with hot water and about 25 drops of GSE and shake. It works wonderfully. Just let it stand for about 10 minutes while you vacuum and by the time you're done, its ready to be wiped off. I also suggest that you invest in a plastic paddle. I got mine at a body shop. They use them to smooth on body putty. I think they have them in many hardware stores for smoothing out spackling compounds. Anyway, they will dig out poop and not scratch cage finishes. The GSE comes in two practical sizes. I usually buy the larger $20 bottle and it lasts for just about an entire year. Its highly concentrated. I use it on anything my birds will likely mouth such as perches, cages, playgyms, toys, etc. I also add one drop to their water dish when its hot in the summer to retard bacteria growth. If you sprout for your birds, it good to add a drop to the rinse water to kill bacteria before you serve them.

Dollar for dollar its a great investment. I think its the best. Many health food stores carry it and you can purchase it online as well. I use the brand by NutriBiotic but that's just because its the brand my health food store carries. You can also purchase this in quarts, but I'm simply too poor.

I really like using Avicine because I know that it is disinfecting my CAG's cage.

What do you use to disinfect?

I use Avicine once a week and Virkon S whenever a boarder bird passes through.

Otherwise, I rely on GSE or bleach and water. I also steam my cages weekly.
