teil fruits

teils are not big on fruits but you do need to work on getting them to eat vegies, i use shredded carrots spinach and sweet potato, and fresh hot peppers as their salad. there are many good sites for recomendations on what types of vegies and some fruits they will eat. remember that when they eat they do not consume as we do and it is hard for people to tell if they are eating them. but they are receiving what they need fromt he veggies. also they do well on pasta and rice i use brown, and nevr salt it . teils do not tollerate salts.

you just have to keep trying , as crazy as it sounds show her that if its good for you its good for her, like try what u want to give her and do the yummy sound trust me my b/f thinks im funny but it works, think of them as babies , and everything will work any way tiels are not to strong on fruits but they love veggies, i have zupreme as a supplement of fruit and veggies and i try to give her lil bites everyday it also encourages you to eat more fruits and veggies, and be healthy...

its a plus for them and for you:) lifes great when u got a bird, they make you happy, like latley ive had alot on my mind but when i come home and see my sweetie im happy all over again, u just gotta love them:)

SO true. I came home just now to see Archer sitting on his manzanita "tree" waiting for me. Of course he wanted to see if I had anything for him, which I didn't, except for an under-the-wings-sctatch. I am reminded every day how much I love him (and my other birds)... he is the most affectionate bird I have ever had the pleasure of living with.

He is also a constant reminder that my man DOES listen from time to time because Archer was a Valentine's/Birthday gift last year, and I REALLY wanted a GC. :)

Btw, the pineapple is fine for them, just watch how much you give. Fruits are high in sugar, which should not be given in large quantities. Kira's favorite treat is pineapple, but she doesn't get it very often. :)

Speaking of peppers...someone mentioned hot peppers. Once, when I was looking after a friend's tiel for a while, he flew and landed in a dish of Indian food! It was a very hot (as in spicy) curry. I was scared to death that when he preened he would burn his little mouth with the hot pepper. I asked on a cockatiel board and they said that hot pepper is fine for pscittacines.

Also, in a bag of cheap seed I have laying aroud, there are dried hot peppers. My husband hung one up for Humphrey and he spent an hour pecking and it and destroying it, so he must have like it. Does anyone know if birds of the parrot family just aren't affected by hot peppers?

THanks Michele and Humphrey

Michele,

I think they are not affected because they don't have saliva.... but I could be wrong. My birds love hot peppers also - and they are a good source of vitamin C.

Have you tried sprouted seed? You can also sprout millet spray. Another good starter food is wheat grass.
