how old must macaw be to lay eggs?
My Scarlet macaw acts like she wants to lay eggs (she pushes her butt inside out) but she is about 8 years old (and is the only bird in the house).
What is this? Can/will she lay eggs? (I have heard chickens lay eggs once a day even though no rooster is around). |

Your scarlet is an adult at anything over 5 or 6. She is at a prime age to start laying. I suggest that you discourage that by doing the following unless you have set up pairs and FULLY understand what you're getting yourself into.
1. Decrease her seed intake. Seed signals birds to breed. 2. Keep all shreddable items out of her environment. 3. Provide NO dark places for her to chose as a nest site (no happy huts, boxes, etc) 4. Increase fresh fruits and veggies 5. Keep her away from male birds 6. Don't stroke her under her wings, her tail or on her back 7. Add UV lighting Mature hens can become chronic egg layers and that's a very bad thing. They can deplete their calcium stores and have eggs bind and break, which can be fatal. You may want to increase her calcium with ground cuttlebone, oyster shell tablets crushed or adding more dark green leafy veggies. THE OUTLAW
