Hey everyone! Long time no talk!
Well, that would be because I am currently vacationing in Bay-eu-tee-full British Colombia. The internet was finally set up yesterday, so I finally get to speak to you all again! I do have a problem however. Little sweetie bird Aree came with me on the 9 hour drive. She was fine with it, I saw her drink and eat, and she was fine the first few days here. Now though, she's still chipper and happy and preens. But I haven't seen her drink in a long time. A long, long time, which I'm scared might be TOO long for a bird. To make matters worse, she hasn't been eating a lot of her pellets. The only food she takes from me are treats (Nutriberries and AviCakes.) I'm scared she might be getting dehydrated, so i've taken to attempting to make her drink. When she's cuddling with me for example, or just hanging around with us, i'll bring her to her water dish and put her beak into the water. When she lifts her head up, she shakes and licks the remaining water from her beak. She normally gets more water on me then she does down her throat, but i'm hoping that'll at least keep her hydrated for a few hours. Any ideas? She's also been very quiet. She still calls to me when I leave the room, but other then that no shreiking or calling at the top of her lungs when i'm gone like at the start of the trip. I should be happy she's quiet. But it just makes me worry. Thanks for any advice, Hayley

Try offering her some bottled water. The local water may not agree with her, and when travelling with birds it's recommended that you give them either bottled water or bring some water from home. We all know that the water tastes different in different places, but there's more to it than that. There's also a difference in the microorganisms (even in clean, treated water) and this can make a bird sick.
Will she drink any kind of juice? Or Gatorade? That would help keep her hydrated. Most other drinks are off limits since caffeine and alcohol are dangerous to birds. Caffeine-free soft drinks aren't officially prohibited, but I've always heard that any soft drink actually causes a net loss of fluids so I wouldn't give them. |
