She's next on the list. That Grey beak is a bit of a challenge. I've been doing sketches of the thing all night. I wound up with a parrot medly at the end, and this was done with a ball point pen.

Beaks and eyes are the HARDEST part to get down... But, they are the most important part to get right- I find that is where the 'personality' of each bird is...

I've only done one Grey to date- I attached it here if you want to take a look at how I attacked the beak structutre. It isn't the best shot, i had to use a digital cam instead of my scanner for that one...

I am going to start on Outlaws bird soon- and if anyone wants to see it, I will do a "W.I.P." (a work-in-progress for those not familiar with 'art terms') that shows it coming together step-by-step....

I'm getting ready to visit my lil'grey so I'll see what I can do in terms of getting good shots of her face/beak.

That's one of the nicest Grey sketches I have seen in a very long time. I know how difficult they are to get "on paper." I like this one a lot. Great work there.

Absolutely AWESOME

Bekfreak, that is an AWESOME grey!
WOW.
KUDOS!!!!!

I am very, very impressed.
Ya got way more skills than I do!

As you said, getting the beak and eye just right are vital to capturing the essence of the bird. You did an excellent job on that grey.

and you were saying in my thread further down that greys are hard to do???

Some may think they're boring in their suit of grey feathers, but I think the CAG/TAG have one of the most refined states of beauty in parrotdom. They're almost made for sketching; The shades & ripples of grey in their plumage lend themselves very well to pencil.

I feel most other parrots almost need to be colored for any artwork to reflect on them properly.
I almost didn't post the two I did because to me they don't seem done without their flashy colors. As nice as the contrast can be, a B&W pic of a Blue & Gold macaw or a Sun Conure is... kinda sad.

I did that grey a while ago, and tried to find it today- I hace NO idea where it got to... I stuck it somewhere for safe keeping, and it is still there, nice and safe... Oh well...

I find it a challenge to try to get the 'effect' of a bright parrot using cold graphite... You just have to learn how to use tone and contrast....
