Senegal Mating Dance
I have a similar post in the Poicephalus section but I decided to repost here to possibly get some more advice. I am not sure how to handle this problem.
Apparently the little dance that Merlin does (regurgitating, stepping, lowers wings, throat noises all at once) is a mating behavior dance. It has been suggested that I discourage this behavior. I have no idea how to do this. He does the dance for me ALL the time...in his cage, outside his cage...
Do I just ignore him and turn my back when he does this? How do I distract him? Treats would only encourage the behavior. Do I say "No" in a meanish voice or something? I just have no idea where to start with this. I would try toys but he doesn't really play with toys much outside his cage (inside he plays constantly) and I am not in a position where I can just open his cage at any time (dog issues). He is 4 years old so this isn't a baby behavior he will grow out of.
I am also wondering if anyone knows why this behavior needs to be discouraged. What is the potential harm that can come from it? I am just curious.
Since this is an unwanted behavior I would like to try and get it under control as soon as possible.
