Old Birds

I visited a pet store while in Tucson yesterday. They had 2 'store' birds on perches with signs talking about the birds. One was a M2 named Whitey that listed a birth date in 1945. The other was an Amazon named Birdo, I believe he is a Double Yellow head. His birth date was listed as Jan 1915! All he did was sit there and say Birdo over and over, but very pretty colors.

Hmm. I'm no math wiz but I think its unlikely an Amazon ever hit 91! I think that someone accidently transposed a number. Its probably really 1951. That would make him 55 and that's still pretty darn good for a zon! They usually are lucky to see 50 and really old zons are maybe 60.

I thought that sounded pretty old for an bird too...but even if it was 1951, that'd be cool too. He'd be older than my parents! LOL I just hope it's living out it's life happy, and the owners don't let it get poked at by kids and stuff!

i did know someone in Florida who was the third owner of an Amazon. Unfortunately the bird was euthanized due to medical problems and the unavailability to give her a better quality of life. From what they could figure between the tree homes the bird was about 90 years old.

I saw an amazon once that was 58 years old. It had a silverish sheen to his back feathers. I guess he had some gray because of his age? Did any of his feathers look like that? 91 sounds a little unreal to me as well.

An amazon commonly boarded at a petshop I know of is in the years of 60... Brian Speers was giving a talk and telling how he had just seen an amazon that was 100 years old.

Ok, that's not that funny! Gad, I'm having one of those "when did I get to be so old" moments.

I'll bet that old amazon is cranky enough that by now kids don't even get near it! If they did, I'm guessing once would be enough.

Heck, I'm not _quite_ as old as that bird, and _I'm_ cranky enough to keep kids at bay LONG before they think of poking me!

As I stated in the first post, his feathers looked really good and colorful. Although his beak looked well weathered, I was going to get a book out to check life expectancies as I didn't think 'zons lived that long. Both birds signs also included the statement, "I am very old and not used to people I don't know. I can also bite real hard."
