Talking Sun Conure Questions

So After My Parents Said Yes To My New Sun Samba, I Have Some Questions.
1) I Know Their Noise Level Is Loud, But Just How Loud? Examples Would Be Appreciated
2) How Big Of A Cage Should I Get And What Would Be The Minimum Size?
3) How Many Hours A Day Should I Let Him Out Of The Cage?
4) What Are Things I Can And What Are Things I Cant Feed Him?
5) How Soon Can He Be Dna Tested?
Im Sure There Are More But Thats All I Can Think Of For Right Now!
Thanks

1. Turn your speakers up and listen to this. It's what you can expect: YouTube - Petey Being Loud

2. As big as you can afford. 24x24x24 would be a decent cage size.

3. If it's quality time with you and your parents, a couple of hours when you get home from school.

4. Here's a link to answer your questions about food: Feeding Your Bird

5. As soon as you want. At the same time, you'll have your "new bird checkup" with a veterinarian who specializes in birds (we'll help you find one because dog and cat vets are not the same). A physical exam, looking at the bird's poop under the microscope, and drawing blood for testing are minimum expectations during the vet visit. The blood drawing of course will also be used for DNA testing. Decide whether you want his wings trimmed while you're at the vet as well.

So how did you manage to turn your parents around?

This is hard to answer. Sunnies are known to be VERY loud at times. I'd say as loud as a car thats lost its muffler. edit; I prefer the answer above!!!!

2) How Big Of A Cage Should I Get And What Would Be The Minimum Size?

as big as you can possibly afford! AT LEAST 2 ft square, and longer is better There are a lot of those questions, look into flight cages.

3) How Many Hours A Day Should I Let Him Out Of The Cage?

One-on-one time, an hour. Out of cage time playing is as much as possible. My two birds are out from 4 pm (when I get home) until 8:30 (bed time)

4) What Are Things I Can And What Are Things I Cant Feed Him?

woods; Bird; Birds: Safe, Toxic Trees, Woods. Safe Tree Wood. Poisonous. Parrots. Parrot cages.
foods; Diet: Safe & Toxic Foods

5) How Soon Can He Be Dna Tested?

its really up to you if you even want it to be done. I haven't for my birds that aren't visually sexable. No reason to, just pick a sex and tell s/he that its name is ___ and that you love it either way.

1) The video clip posted by birdlady pretty much says it all... just be sure to turn the volume up!
2) All of my books say 24"x24"x24" minimum for a Sun, but of course go as big as you are able to.
3) As much as you can, but try to give him at least an hour of quality time every day. When you're doing other stuff, you can let him ride around on your shoulder or get him a perch that can be taken around the house with you to spend time with the family out of the cage.
4) Just check out the sites birdlady and swanwillow posted... My Sun particularly loves fruit, corn, and carrots.
5) As soon as you want. I'd just get it done when he gets his/her first vet check up. I don't know what mine is yet, but I just decided he's a boy.
Good luck, I bet you can't wait to bring Samba home!!

Congrats on getting a Sun. I hope everything works out well. I just wanted to add a note about volume. One of my best friend's had a Sun Conure and we could hear it from the end of the street. They can make great pets though so I hope you and your family grow to love Samba as much as I love my Senegal.

I barely even notice the volume anymore, but that's because I think I've lost some of my hearing It's hard to explain: if the screaming bothers you, it'll really bother you; on the other hand, you might not even notice at all after a while.

But there have been times my ears started to ring after my sun screamed while sitting on the back of my chair. Now I just move away from him when I can tell he's going to let loose.
